Guns to Gardens, June 11
The prophet Isaiah offers a vision of a peaceful world in which weapons of destruction are transformed into gardening tools. The Gun Violence Prevention Team of Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church is joining with other faith and community groups in a small step toward bringing Isaiah’s vision to reality by offering our second gun safe-surrender event.
The Guns to Gardens event will be on Sunday, June 11, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the parking lot of Douglass Boulevard Christian Church, corner of Bardstown Road and Douglass Blvd., in the Highlands. This is an opportunity for anyone with unwanted guns to dispose of them safely and anonymously, with the assurance that the weapons will not be resold or end up back on the street. At our first event last year, 28 guns were surrendered and cut into pieces with chop saws. The pieces are being forged into tools and jewelry by local blacksmith Craig Kaviar.
Similar events are being offered across the country the weekend of June 10–11 as part of a national Guns to Gardens movement launched by RAWtools and Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. If you have guns you no longer want or need, or if you know someone who does, please bring them and help us “turn swords into plowshares” on June 11.
