As the bulletin and this newsletter were whipped into shape for the week, I looked at the content of announcements and thought, "huh...seems kinda slim." But that's ok - it can be like that sometimes in the life of the church, sort of like a summer vacation from activity. After all: this is the summer, and the "program year" runs from September to May!

Then I was reminded of a colleague's social media post I came across this week where she shared that she and her church had just completed "Recess" - a two-week period every summer where the entire church shuts down so that all may fully rest and practice Sabbath. Why? Because most people have to do so much just to prepare to go on vacation - it's almost as though they do twice the amount of work! Their session's rationale is that by giving everyone the two weeks at the same time, no one is needing to cover for the other, do extra work, or have angst before, during, or after the break to prepare or catch up. It's an interesting concept, that's for sure!

I also thought about how much work is going on behind the scenes as the committees of the session work and plan for worship and activities for the remaining weeks of the summer and that soon-approaching program year. I'm excited about the many opportunities - both old and new - to connect and share and celebrate as a Fellowship Family that are in the works. I ask that you continue to pray for the leadership as we plan.

This Sunday, we continue the "Talk to the Hand" sermon series - only two more to go! How might the pinky inform our faith? And how does it tie into our gospel passage for this week? I look forward to sharing more on Sunday morning, whether in-person or online.

Beer and Hymns is back! Join Fellowship’s own Rev. Blake Tickle as he leads the singing of hymns at Oden Brewing Company on Sunday, July 31st, from 3-5pm. All are welcome to share in a pint and a song at this ecumenical event.

Wondering what to do with all of those grocery shopping bags? The Missions committee will be collecting “gently used” plastic grocery bags for Backpack Beginnings. Please bring any you don’t use to church with you, leaving them on the Missions table in the Dogwood Lobby closest to the double doors leading towards the classrooms.
Prayer Concerns and Celebrations

  • Peggy Loomis had successful Carpal Tunnel wrist surgery last week and is grateful for prayers for her continued recovery.
  • Ben Wordsworth sustained a fibular fracture and ankle sprain on his right leg after falling at work on 7/17. He is scheduled to have surgery on Monday. If you would like to assist in providing meals for him, please contact Linda Ueland.
  • Curt Bacorn, friend of Fred Campbell, will be undergoing testing in anticipation of a triple bypass surgery.
  • Phyllis King requests prayers for her daughter-in-law, Christy, who is having to make medication adjustments after a lupus flare-up.
  • Tye Wittman requests prayers for his friends, Ryan and Lauren Barnes, as Ryan undergoes testing for some medical problems he is experiencing.
  • Beth Reynolds requests prayers of recovery for her mother-in-law, Linda, who underwent a successful total knee replacement yesterday (7/18).
  • Andy Delafield requests prayers for his brother, Gray Delafield, who is recovering from a detached retina.
  • Lesa Layno requests prayers for her sister, Libby Ansel, who lost her job last week as she continues to battle stage 4 breast cancer.
  • Lesa Layno requests prayer of recovery for her sister, Cindy Cantrell, who underwent successful gall bladder surgery yesterday (7/18).
  • Claire Clark requests prayer for her mother, Barbara Dooley, hospitalized in Chattanooga for heart issues, and moving to rehab facility later in the week.
  • Prayers for former transitional pastor Joel Long, his wife Ann, and their granddaughter Bailey, as they share a mild case of Covid at the beach. (This is Ashley’s daughter.)
  • Prayers requested for Kate Hopper, friend of Martha Shannon (FPC’s Office Manager), who is facing difficult times due to her chronic lupus diagnosis.
  • Prayers for Ukraine and those caught in the crossfire as the war continues.
