Dear Nevada AAP Members,

The wait is finally over.

On June 22, the Nevada State Immunization Program issued this Technical Bulletin on Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccines Recommended for Children Aged 6 months – 5 years. The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services is encouraging families to speak with a health care provider about vaccination and COVID-19 vaccines.

And the AAP, together with the White House, is encouraging all of you, our nation's pediatricians, to bring it up with families who do not. On Thursday, June 30, the AAP will welcome a special guest from the White House to address AAP member questions about the current Response to COVID-19. Learn more and register here.

Read on in this email for exciting chapter updates, opportunities to improve care, and highlights of events of interest to pediatricians in Nevada.

Be well,

Leann

Cucalon Calderon Talked with KOLO about Melatonin Poisoning
Nevada AAP board member Jose Cucalon Calderon, MD, FAAP was recently interviewed on KOLO in Reno about the CDC report on melatonin poisoning in children. Watch the video here.

Chapter members are encourage to share the recorded Walk with a Doc and Camine con un Doctor videos we created on the topic with your patients. Last December, Nevada AAP Immediate Past President Pam Greenspon, MD, FAAP presented Healthy Sleep Habits: How Many Hours Does Your Child Need? In February, Family Practice Doctor María Fernández presented a Spanish-language talk on good sleep habits.

Nevada AAP chapter members talk with journalists and write op-eds to provide accurate and reliable medical information to the public.

Successfully working with the media requires planning, strategy, hard work, and allocation of resources. The AAP provides tools to help pediatricians ensure that journalists get the most accurate information possible on pediatric issues. Visit Working with the Media to learn more about the many resources from the AAP to support members wishing to work with the media.

OPPORTUNITIES
Tell Medicaid the Cost of Care
All Nevada Medicaid doctors (provider type 20) have from now until September 16, 2022 to complete and submit the Quadrennial Rate Review (QRR).

This is a great opportunity to report to the state the actual cost of delivering care. If enough doctors report that Medicaid is underpaying them, the state must increase rates.

The process of reporting cost of care is not an easy one but well worth it to ensure adequate reimbursement. Doctors will not be invited to complete a rate review again until 2026.

To get started, please watch this informational video.

Don't delay getting started on this important opportunity!
