Champion America’s Entrepreneurs
As new business applications soar, the Chamber remains
steadfast in its mission to remove free enterprise obstacles.
This National Entrepreneurship Week, we celebrate the power of free enterprise to solve problems, create jobs, foster innovation, and serve communities.
It's also a moment to recognize the obstacles businesses still face.
Good news: Entrepreneurship is booming across America. A record-breaking 5.5 million new business applications were filed in 2023, demonstrating a building wave of optimism for the U.S. economy.
Why it matters: New businesses deliver jobs and boost economies in communities across America, so it's vital for the government to back solutions that encourage the creation of new businesses, not hinder them.
More work remains: As we celebrate this milestone, looming new regulations and government overreach still pose serious threats to businesses, especially smaller ones.
Small biz squeeze: The burden of government regulations skyrocketed under the Biden Administration, costing businesses $3 trillion annually. Small businesses, in particular, feel the squeeze, with three times higher compliance costs than larger companies.
Red tape tangle: 40 years ago, Congress tried to alleviate the pain of undue regulations on small businesses with the Regulatory Flexibility Act. Yet, over the years, government bureaucrats have exploited loopholes that disguise the actual cost of regulations while sticking small businesses with the bill. Such as:
- Soaring costs and paperwork: A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposal doesn't just add more paperwork; it makes it up to seven times more expensive for small businesses looking to sell or grow through mergers.
Fighting back: The U.S. Chamber is joining forces with 100 local chambers of commerce and over 48 national organizations to fight back and fix the Regulatory Flexibility Act.
- The fix: Together, we are championing the bipartisan PROVE IT Act to give small businesses a stronger voice in the government's regulatory process. If passed into law, this will plug the loopholes exploited by unelected bureaucrats and give small businesses a platform to question rules to ensure they're fair and transparent.
Bottom line: As we celebrate National Entrepreneurship Week, the U.S. Chamber stands committed to championing free enterprise and cultivating an America where businesses of all sizes can start, thrive, innovate, and uplift communities.
