In other data news, on May 24th, FCW published an article entitled DHS wants answers on how well digital identity systems work. In this story, Natalie Alms describes how the Department of Homeland Security's research arm is conducting tests to evaluate the effectiveness of remote identity validation technologies, particularly focusing on matching selfies to photos on identity documents and authenticating identity documents. The tests aim to address questions about the accuracy, equity, and potential fraud risks associated with these technologies, which have gained attention in government applications such as vetting benefits applicants and credentialling workers.

  • The so-called remote identity validation technology demonstration also includes tests on the efficacy of systems meant to authenticate identity documents like driver’s licenses as valid by assessing a photo of them, said Arun Vemury, the lead of the directorate’s biometric and identity tech center. Future tests will look at so-called liveness tech meant to confirm that it’s a real person on the other end of the screen submitting identity documents.”
