Highlights of the Sunday, August 24, Meeting

Fr. Ben called the meeting to order at 11:39. Marty Cavanaugh, Vestry Clerk, presented the minutes of the March meeting and they were approved.

Rector
  • The consecration of Bishop Brian Burgess will occur on Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m. The service will be livestreamed on the Diocesan website homepage.
  • Church Camp will be at East Bay Camp in Hudson, Illinois from July 3-9. Fr. Ben will be serving as chaplain for the camp so will be away beginning on July 2.
  • Upcoming parish life events: Healing Eucharist, May 3 at 10 a.m.; Book Fair, May 6-7; Lunch Bunch, May 11; Game Night (tentative), May 13; Parish Picnic, May 22; Ascension Day, May 26.
  • Fr. Ben will be out of town Sunday-Tuesday, April 24 – 26, to attend a retreat and will be taking vacation April 28 – May 2 at Nashotah House. Fr. Boase will celebrate mass on May 1.

Junior Warden
  • Walter Bohn fixed the day/night sensor so that problems with controlling interior lights should be eliminated.
  • Irrigation system needs to be turned on.

Treasurer
  • Treasurer Callies was not present but provided March reports in advance of the meeting. She also sent an email indicating that progress in resolving Aplos issues had occurred since the last meeting as helpful Zoom meetings with Aplos representatives were arranged by Marian.

Communications
  • Marian Smithson reported 78% readership of parish emails, including the newsletter, in the last 90 days and that several website and Facebook changes were made for Holy Week. Also, an Easter service advertisement was placed in The Intelligencer.

  • Pat Hulme and Marian talked by phone about the need for May and June coffee hour signups and determined that providing reminders in the newsletter would be helpful but that targeted email requests to parishioners who have not yet signed up this year may be the most effective. A special email will be going out every two months to appropriate parishioners, asking them to consider volunteering.

ECW
  • Velma Schmidt agreed calls are preferable in contacting potential coffee hour volunteers. She also said she would check on plans for game night.

Education
  • Fr. Ben ordered books for anyone interested in confirmation which he plans to use during the summer.

Music
  • Brian Pezza reported that the last date for the choir to be at Sunday services is May 22. Also, he reported that Henry will be taking some time off, in part to attend a continuing education event.

Pearson Hall Project
  • Painting of Pearson Hall is completed and Vallow has ordered the carpet tile and kitchen flooring. Once these are received, Vallow will contact Marian Smithson, project coordinator, to determine an installation date.
  • A total of $18,538 has been received to date -- $300 more than the initial anticipated cost for Phase One.
  • Phase Two cost information will be shared in July but excitement about the painting and possible Phase Two improvements has led to suggestions of an additional kitchen refrigerator with an icemaker, a new stove, and a new kitchen sink. No major push to raise funds for these items is planned but a wish list with cost estimates probably will appear in the newsletter mid-summer.

National Cathedral Funeral for Madeleine Albright
[Episcopal News Service] President Joe Biden, as well as former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, were among those who paid tribute to Madeleine Albright, the former secretary of state, during her funeral held April 27 at Washington National Cathedral in the nation’s capital.

Albright, who first served in the Clinton administration as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in the Clinton administration before later becoming the first female secretary of state in 1997, died of cancer on March 23 at age 84. She regularly attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington’s Georgetown neighborhood and was serving on Washington National Cathedral’s governing body at the time of her death.
Coffee Hour Thank You!

Thank you to the households of vestry members Depew and McKenney plus the Bohns, Donald/Gillentines, and Meg Solon for filling six May and June coffee hour slots. Volunteers are still needed for May 22 and June 19/26. Sign up for these and other dates at this site.
Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
