The cultural burn operation pictured here was a knowledge exchange on traditional stewardship with a focus on California's shifting landscape due to climate change. Not only did this cultural burn serve as a valuable learning experience, but it also played a vital role in removing hazardous vegetation and reducing the risk of fires.
DEMONSTRATION: CAL FIRE and Local Tribes Share Knowledge and Practices at Chamberlain Cultural Burn

At a recent cultural burn in the Chamberlain area of JDSF, CAL FIRE demonstrated its continued commitment to collaboration and partnership with tribal communities across the state while learning, creating, and documenting cultural resources and practices. The burn was conducted to facilitate a learning session between CAL FIRE staff and Tribes local to JDSF. All participants shared knowledge on traditional stewardship through fire, and how CAL FIRE deals with fire on a California landscape with climate change in the forefront of the Californian’s minds. The burn was also conducted to remove hazardous vegetation and reduce the risk of conflagration fires and protect the resources on JDSF.

RECREATION: CAL FIRE & Redwood Practical Shooters Clean Up Trash and Debris at JDSF

Spring has finally sprung and that means visitors are returning to the forest. One of the most visible and frequently visited target shooting areas on JDSF is the JDSF 408 gravel pit. This site was excavated many years ago to extract pit-run rock for road surfacing. It is also highly visible to the public in an area that sees significant use, as noted by the local community through frequent complaints of poor appearance. Earlier this month, CAL FIRE JDSF staff and local non-profit, Redwood Practical Shooters, collaborated to clean up the gravel pit area.

Learning and sharing forest management practices and experiences is an important function of the demonstration forest system and JDSF is the perfect classroom to put this knowledge into practice.
DEMONSTRATION: Forest Stewardship Workshop Participants Learn DIY Forest Management Skills

University of California Cooperative Extension advisors and JDSF foresters joined forces in early May to teach a hands-on class to local graduates of the Forest Stewardship Workshop series. This is a 10-week long hybrid-learning class which aims to educate private forest landowners to better understand, manage and protect their forests by developing a forest management plan, engaging with natural resource professionals, and taking advantage of cost-share opportunities that can help them meet their management goals. Participants headed into the forest for hands-on technical training and discussion as well as learning how to set goals and objectives to direct management activities, and more.
