In 2020, the Foundation for ACPE in partnership with the ACPE Research Committee launched the Research Grants Initiative and funded two research projects: one that explored the relationship between CPE and Emotional Intelligence ($54,987), and the other that examined the Impact of Covid-19 on CPE ($18,883).

You can learn more about the findings from those two projects below. Congratulations to the research team(s) for their stellar work!

In Case You Missed It
In so many ways, I feel fortunate to listen to twenty-somethings wonder what ever happened to summer. They reflect on the days just a few short years in their past when school stopped for a while, where they filled their days with play, camps, sleep, and long hours with friends. Read more
In 2019 a group of “Enneagram aficionados” around the county came together to form the “Enneagram in CPE” Community of Practice. We intended to exchange ideas on integrating the Enneagram into our CPE curriculum in various life-giving, educational, and spiritual growth-oriented ways. Read more
It has recently come to the attention of the Accreditation and Certification Commissions that due to a variety of factors outside of anyone’s control, there are programs that are facing challenges in meeting the minimum of 3 students for a unit of CPE. Read more
We are a special subgroup formed to take a special look at where bias around gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity impact our ACPE Community. We are looking at how our language, experiences, and learned stories impact the ethics, certification, and accreditation processes. Read more

Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
This week, we’re offering a unique poem from Maria Popova, the creator of “The Marginalian” e-newsletter. She has taken lines from programs from each year that Krista Tippett’s On Being has aired and woven them into a poem. Each line is linked to the referenced episode:
Can you recall a day in recent memory where you didn’t hear someone talk about how busy they are? Perhaps that is true for you as well. This article from “The Mindful Leader” invites a disciplined process of reflecting on time, how we use/fill it, and where we are in relationship to our calendars. It’s a quick read, but it offers what could be a life-changing practice:

Juneteenth Reflection
by Rev. Dr. Trina Williams-Johnson

This year Juneteenth hit different. My first celebration since the pandemic shut everything down. My first celebration after the beginning of the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. Here are some of my reflections.

Juneteenth is bittersweet for me
For it is both celebration and lament

This day, gave voice to the written words that granted freedom
Gave the last slaves hope for a new lot in life

On that day, freedom was theirs
They could come and go as they pleased

It is the days and years that follow that get me
For, they couldn’t have known that freedom did not mean equality
This Week on the Calendar
As a part of ACPE’s commitment to anti-bias practices in all dimensions of our work, a subcommittee of the Anti-Bias Work Group has recommended we stop publishing a “holy days” calendar, recognizing that all efforts will be inadequate and may unintentionally reinforce privileged perspectives for some while inadequately representing others. Instead, ACPE will focus on:

  • Promoting educational inclusion and exclusion,
  • Deconstructing the Christocentric history of the ACPE,
  • The impact of how our US context is also predominantly Christian,
  • the intersections among racism, xenophobia, and religiously based oppressions, and
  • the implications of the increasing secularization/shift to pluralism and spiritual but not religious (SBNR) values in US society.

We encourage you to reference these and additional resources as both educational tools and when planning programs and events (note: careful reading of the tools at these links will illustrate the above points, but as such could foster good conversation within your programs and practices):
Memorials and Milestones
  • A celebration of life will be held for ACPE Certified Educator Rev. Dr. Peter Yuichi Clark on Thursday, July 21 from 2:00p-4:00p. Attendees are requested to wear a festive color to celebrate Peter's life and ministry. There will also be a Livestream of the service on ucsfspiritcare.org. To RSVP, click here.
