Sticky Situation - Correction Tape Needed! | |
In last week's Seminole Spotlight, we mistakenly used the wrong image and name for our assistant principal piece. We are here to correct that mistake and celebrate the TWO assistant principals at two schools who gave their students a real treat with an incentive to tape the AP to the wall.
We want to make sure we note BOTH of these awesome educators and put the correct names and photos out there for our families to enjoy.

Lake Howell High School Band Director Wins Prestigious Award from Barry Manilow

The legendary Barry Manilow was in Orlando on Tuesday night, performing at the Amway Center and giving an award to a local teacher.
The music icon sings about a miracle on stage, and off-stage he has created one right here in Central Florida.
Lake Howell High music teacher Jose Eslava was the winner of the Manilow Music Project, receiving $5,000 for himself and $5,000 for a school instrument. We caught up with him before the concert during his music class. "We are in need of a tuba. I have six tuba players, but only five functional tubas."
"All around the country, they’re running out of instruments in music and art classes because of budget cuts," Manilow told FOX 35. "These kids are playing musical instruments that are old and broken down. So, when I heard that 15 years ago, I thought, I gotta do something."
That’s why this famous singer created The Manilow Music Project, a non-profit organization that provides instruments to students. Now he’s doing something for Central Florida music students. Eslava plans to buy a new tuba for his classroom.
"Jose is one of the people that continue to teach music to children," Manilow said, "and it’s so important because music will change a young person’s life."
"Overwhelming, wonderful, a magical experience," was how Eslava described Tuesday's night show. He said musical performances can change a student’s life forever, and that’s why this award is so important. "You get all these students who come from different talent levels, different backgrounds, different lifestyles, and you come together to do this one magical thing."

Goldsboro Elementary Magnet School Has A Very Busy Long Weekend!
This past weekend Goldsboro Elementary had a number of their students participate in numerous events in the community.
On Saturday, two FIRST LEGO League Robotics teams participated at the RoboFest event held at Spruce Creek High School in Volusia County. The Space Droid Team won an award for the unique innovation project. Both Robotics teams picked up an alternative bid to participate in the upcoming regional event. This event was attended by public and private elementary and middle schools from all over the area, along with some private groups as well.
Also, a number of students represented at the local math competition which was held at Heathrow Elementary School. At this event, students win individual trophies for their grade level, which also included first place in 3rd , 4th and 5th grades. Goldsboro also took home the overall first place in the event.
Not only were they represented at STEM Robotics event and the Math event, students also showed off their sport skills at the Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Competition. We had two current students win in their age brackets and a former Goldsboro student win in his age group.
Then on Monday, at the local Sanford Martin Luther King Parade, the D.R.U.M. Group marched in the parade while showing off their drum skills and drumming on five-gallon buckets. These students also showed off their musical writing ability by performing beats the group composed themselves. The school's safety patrol members marched in the parade as well. Students were met with many members of the community shouting out "that was my elementary school" as they went by, making the event all the more special and an honor to continue the legacy that was started so long ago.
