Dr. Mark Glafke from the Class of '90 Gives Second Reading at The Vatican on Good Friday
It was an incredibly proud moment for us Panthers when we learned that Dr. Mark Glafke from the San Joaquin Memorial High School Class of 1990 gave the second reading on Good Friday (April 15, 2022) at the Vatican with Pope Francis.

All of us at Memorial are immensely happy and honored for this important and special moment for him. Dr. Mark Glafke is a licensed psychologist and Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP) for the state of Indiana. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of California in 1994. He holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Purdue University Class of 2010.

He has previously worked as a psychologist in the counseling center at Purdue University, for the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, and at a Community Mental Health center before opening his own private practice in Lafayette, IN in 2013. He chose to remain in Indiana (near Purdue) due to meeting his wife (who grew up in the area), and finding a strong and vibrant Catholic parish community there. His clinical practice has centered on the integration of Catholic faith with the science of psychology. He is a member of the Catholic Depth Psychology Group and is a regular attendee of the Conference of the Catholic Psychotherapy Association.

His focus of work overall has been on providing counseling for individual adults and couples, but he also specializes in psychological assessment for candidates for seminary and religious life, as well as providing counseling for members of the clergy and religious orders. This work led him to a position as a consultant and adjunct faculty for Mundelein Seminary in Illinois (while maintaining his private practice and residence in Indiana) before accepting his current position at the seminary in Rome.

SJM recently had the pleasure of exchanging an email conversation with Dr. Mark Glafke and the following are his responses:

Q1: How did this opportunity to give the Second Reading at the Good Friday mass present itself? Was there an application process for this?

Answer 1: Due to my growing work specializing with seminarian population, as well as due to conference presentations I had completed with colleagues regarding psychological assessments via the Catholic Psychotherapy Association, I was approached last spring by the Pontifical North American College, the American seminary in Rome, about becoming the Director of Counseling Services. After careful prayer and discernment, my wife and I felt called to accept the position and we relocated to Rome in August 2021. We still maintain our home in Indiana where we return during academic breaks (Christmas and summers). We will be here at least three years with the possibility of extending the current contract in 2024.

Q2: How did you feel about your participation at the Good Friday mass at The Vatican?

Answer 2: Regarding serving as lector at the Good Friday Services, a representative from the Vatican contacted the college requesting a lay person who is a native English speaker as a volunteer. Therefore, being the only faculty member who is not a priest, I was approached. Due to my history of public speaking and previous experience serving as a lector in parishes previously, it felt comfortable, but even so, it was definitely a challenge to know the Mass would be broadcast globally. Additionally, from my vantage point in the basilica, I was facing not only the faithful who had gathered there for the Good Friday liturgy, but this included the Holy Father, cardinals, bishops, and ambassadors as well. Thankfully, a great amount of peace came over me while reading as I not only felt comfortable in the space (visiting the basilica on a weekly basis), but mainly I believe as a result of prayer and preparation, feeling comforted by the words of the scripture as I read them which focused on the mercy and love of our Lord exhibited through his humbling and loving act of his bitter passion and death for the sake of our salvation.

Q3: Do you get to work closely with Pope Francis and if yes in what capacity?

Answer 3: Regarding Pope Francis, my wife and I have had the opportunity to meet him face-to-face, but the encounter was relatively brief as I was introduced to him as the new counselor for the seminary. Therefore, I have yet to complete any direct work with him. My focus now is on counseling services and providing human formation talks for the seminarians living at the college and studying in Rome.

As we all know our Senior Class of 2022 will be graduating from San Joaquin Memorial High School in less than a month and we decided to ask Dr. Mark Glafke for words of encouragement for the seniors.

Q4: What advice would you give our Senior Class of 2022 graduating in exactly 1 month?

Answer 4: A. Life: Deepen your relationship with God or if you are struggling with it, be willing to investigate it openly and seek guidance and support from priests and religious to have questions answered. Developing confidence in Our Lord’s specific love and delight in you will be the bedrock for the remainder of your decisions and choices throughout your life and help you grow and thrive in life despite its challenges and disappointments.

i. Be brutally honest with yourself about your strengths and weakness.
ii. Think of the well-being of others before yourself and you will never be
without.
iii. Ditch social media and interact directly with friends and family.
iv. Be willing to speak with your loved ones about difficulties in your
relationships. It is difficult but a path to healing and strong relationships.

B. Academics and Career:

i. If you go on to college, don’t stress about the major you choose. Select
something that holds great interest to you and apply yourself as best you
can. Showing yourself and potential future employers or graduate
schools that you are bright, motivated, hard-working and mature.
ii. If you don’t pursue studies in college, pursue a trade or vocational pursuit
so that you can earn a living wage and live without debt.
iii. Focus on developing authentic, honest, and loving relationships
with friends, family, and others. It will be the most important thing in
your life next to your Catholic faith.
iv. Begin investing money each month even if it is only a small
amount. It will add up over time and over twenty years you will thank me
for it.

Dr. Mark Glafke currently lives on the campus of the Pontifical North American College, which is actually located within the Vatican City State, and therefore only a short walk to St. Peter’s Basilica. He returns to Fresno at least once a year to visit friends and family. Him and his wife always look forward to their time in Fresno but wish they could travel here more often.

We are extremely proud of you Dr. Mark Glafke and thank you for allowing us to celebrate this unforgettable moment in your life. You and your family are always welcome on our SJM campus and we hope to see you here in the near future.

Ryan Golden from SJM Class of 2018
will Attend Stanford University to start Ph.D. Program in Chemistry
Photo Above: Attached PDF (click on photo) to view the publication of Ryan's work
This past December Ryan Golden graduated from UC Berkeley with a BS in Chemistry. He joined the Professional Co-Ed Chemistry Fraternity on campus, Alpha Chi Sigma, during which he made his closest friends and held numerous leadership positions. At the end of his Freshman year, he joined the lab of Professor Evan Miller where he was able to participate in undergraduate
chemistry research for 3 years focusing on the synthetic design of a new class of small-molecule fluorescent dyes (see publication above that he co-authored). Also at the end of his Freshman year he became the undergraduate assistant in the NMR facility in the College of Chemistry, a position he maintained until last December to interact with a variety of researchers.

He participated in a Drug Discovery internship at ORIC Pharmaceuticals in 2021 where he worked on developing therapeutics for cancer. Most recently he began a new position in the Gray Lab at Stanford Medical School as part of the Cancer Institute where he'll be developing kinase degraders and inhibitors for cancer therapeutics. Last fall he applied for Chemistry Ph.D. programs and was accepted to Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, and UCLA. He has decided to attend Stanford in the fall 2022 to start his Ph.D. in Chemistry as a fully funded candidate.

Today Golden continues to stay in close communication with his SJM counselors and academic advisors and is very thankful for the guidance and support he received from them. He shared with us that if it wasn't for the help and conversations of all his advisors at SJM he would be in a very different position.

Kathi Morris Published Memoir becomes Amazon #1 Best Seller
Kathi Morris is a graduate from the class of 1969 from SJM. She released a book on November 30, 2021 titled, We Were the Morris Orphans, 4 Brothers, 5 Sisters & Me. That same day the book launched it rose to #1 Best Seller on Amazon.

In the book Morris writes about attending SJM and living at the boarding house with the nuns, among other things that were special to her and her siblings while attending Memorial.

From that July day in 1968 the Morris family became the Morris orphans: ten children who attracted nationwide attention, and a trust fund that didn’t bring out the best in those who fostered them. Kathi, the oldest, was only seventeen when her parents were killed by a drunk driver. This is her story—behind the headlines—of when the Morris orphans only had their mutual loss and each other.

This memoir was a finalist in the 2019 San Francisco Writers Conference. She won grand prize at the iconic Sardine Factory in Monterey, California. To learn more about please visit her site.
