Aviation Mechanic Airman Certification Standards

New FAA Certification Standards

The new Aviation Mechanic – General, Airframe, and Powerplant Airman Certification Standards (ASA-ACS-1) will be shipping by the end of July. This newly released FAA publication defines the aeronautical knowledge, risk management, and skills required for the Mechanic Certificate. Also included within the text is the new FAA-G-ACS-1; a companion guide to the Aviation Mechanic General, Airframe, and Powerplant Airman Certification Standards that provides additional information pertinent to anyone involved with the FAA airman certification process. Additionally, ASA has included references for each subject, so applicants, instructors, and evaluators will know which FAA publication to look to for additional guidance on the subject, including the scope and depth of the expected knowledge and skill.

This ACS-1 becomes effective in September 2022 along with the new Part 147 rule, and will be the reference for the FAA Aviation Mechanic Knowledge and Oral & Practical Tests beginning July 2023. The FAA AMT Practical Test Standards (ASA-8081-AMT-4) remain available for sale and in effect until June 30, 2023. AMT schools modifying or adding curriculum should use the ASA-ACS-1, effective September 2022. Applicants should check with their school and instructor to determine which standards they should usethe new ACS-1 or PTS (ASA-8081-AMT-4)—based on their intended O&P test date.
