“Blueberries for Sale.”
Like me, you may have noticed the signs announcing the return of the cherished wild fruit that thrives in our rocky landscape. We are entering peak season for local food, with summer produce – like beans, zucchini, and tomatoes – ready to be harvested and enjoyed.
We are fortunate in Greater Sudbury to have a network of community gardens and urban food forests that increase residents’ access to fresh produce while fostering knowledge of how to grow our own food. For example, local non-profit projects like the Flour Mill Community Farm provide paid youth employment and training opportunities, and members of Global Gardens N’Swakamok/Sudbury grow produce from around the world while building connections to the land here.
The Good Food Project’s mobile market will be passing through city neighbourhoods throughout the month of August, while the outdoor Sudbury Market continues to be a great place to purchase regionally grown and locally produced food products until mid-October.
So, whether you stumble upon a patch of wild blueberries or spend hours tending to your own garden each day, I hope you can find the time to savour the local flavours of August.
