A WORTHY CAUSE

by Jo Strausz Rosen

If the cause is right, the means will come.” This quote, attributed to Gandhi, is my fundraising mantra. I hold tightly to this belief in my work as Director of Development for Jewish Senior Life. Each Friday our team makes the case for the support of our agency in our Shabbat Shalom newsletter. Reflected in the smiling faces of the people we serve, are feelings of gratitude and joy.

The cause is right.

Jewish Senior Life is far more than a place to live. It’s six beautiful residences in two vibrant communities in southeast Michigan where residents build and renew bonds of friendship and pursue their passions. It’s where 850 residents actively engage with one another and, as a result, remain active in mind, body, and spirit. And it's where we express Jewish spiritual, social and cultural values through creative programs and services that are designed for all our residents, families and community members.

TALKING JEWISH SENIOR LIFE WITH JOYCE, ADA, AND ANNA

JSL residents share their unique perspectives on the vibrant and fulfilling life within this thriving community. Check the JSL YouTube page for more.

FRIENDS

It’s been such a joy to get to know some of the members of our JSL community on a deeper level. And the stories! Forty different voices sharing forty entirely different experiences. I can’t wait to read them all and I can’t wait ‘till we can share them with the community.

In the meantime, please join us for the Fall Fashion Show and the special JSL screening of Golda at the Maple Theater.

Fall Fashion Fun

On Tuesday, August 29 at Fleischman/Hechtman Residences and Wednesday, August 30 at Meer, at 1pm, our fabulous resident models will be showing off some of the boutique’s fall fashions. Although it may be blistering outside, inside the air conditioning will be perfect for jackets and sweaters in all the season’s great colors. Come for cookies, coffee, and a first crack at shopping the boutique’s fall fashions! Every penny goes to support programs at JSL – so it’s guilt free shopping.

Golda

The Maple Theater has invited us to have a special JSL screening of Golda on Wednesday, September 6 at 2pm. Tickets will be available at the door. They are $8 and include popcorn. Golda, which features Helen Mirren as Golda Meir and Liev Schreiber as Henry Kissinger focuses on the Yom Kippur war. Outnumbered, outgunned, surrounded, isolated, and frustrated by the infighting of her cabinet, Meir races against time to save millions of lives on both sides of the conflict. We hope you’ll join us! If you have a family member at a JSL residence, this might be a nice family outing.

Volunteering

Jewish Senior Life is a bustling community and largely volunteer driven. We have opportunities for everything from setting Shabbat tables to running special interest programs for all ages and any schedule. Please call me at 248 592-5062 to get involved!

Shabbat Shalom.

AT HOME WORKOUT

Improve Balance & Prevent Falls

As we age, our balance and stability deteriorates, making us more susceptible to falls. Falling injuries can cause broken bones and head injuries. Perform these exercises to improve your balance and strengthen your legs and core muscles.

JSL AUGUST HAPPENINGS

SCHMOOZE WITH SU

Former Eton Academy teacher, now JSL Vendor, Su Nigoff, schmoozes with JSL residents and after thirty years of Su's News - sometimes called “Schmooze with Su” – she encourages residents to engage in conversations about current events or sing with her and enjoy each other's company. The residents of Fleischman, Meer and the Brown Center (West Bloomfield) are treated to activities created especially for them. "Making residents feel good is so meaningful to me," said Su. She'll continue to work as long as she has the energy.

DRUMMING UP

SOME FUN

Third floor residents at Coville assisted living apartments in Oak Park packed on the fun, percussion style! Led by Prentis resident Terri Silberstein, participants banged on a variety of percussion instruments, including drums of various shapes and sizes, maracas, tambourines and a rain stick. Terri - who honed her skills from classes she took with African drummers in Lansing - has been drumming for many years.

The activity was a major hit with Coville Memory Care Life Enrichment Coordinators Gillian Faust, and Joanne Kristal. The residents agreed it was "exhilarating, original, innovative, a lot of fun, and a delightful stress reliever."

BASEBALL AND BEING TOGETHER

Hechtman residents supported the Detroit Tigers on National Play Ball Day, August 1st. Dressed in their baseball best, the group of good friends cheered for the home team.

Known as "America’s favorite pastime," the first recorded game took place in 1846.

RESIDENT RECIPE

of the week

Marlene's Plum Cake

Hechtman resident Phyllis Lewkowicz's "Marlene's Plum Cake" takes - well - the CAKE. The recipe from her son-in-law's mother is a favorite and she thinks it's special because it calls for fresh fruit and it's easy to make.

"I love to bake and cook because it makes people happy. I enjoy feeding them,” Phyllis said. "It gives me something to do in spite of my vision loss and I love to share with my friends the delicious things in life."

A Man So Great

JSL and our greater Detroit community recently lost a cherished and respected resident. Rabbi Yosil Rosenzweig, 76 years old, reminded me much of my late father both in character and nature. Rabbi Rosenzweig was a man who embodied opposite traits which impressed so many of us. He was bold, vocal and firm in his beliefs and yet he was loving, engaging and respectful of others regardless of their faith and denomination. He was a physically big man with a big heart and never withheld his emotions when sharing a memory or story. He was drawn to music and spirituality and found those beautiful qualities in those he met. By his choice, he and I studied Torah daily throughout Covid and beyond. Honestly, our learning served as my daily therapeutic hour from where I was able to draw strength with the intention of imparting it to others. Our views resonated with each other, and we exchanged valuable tips on life.

Over the years, Rabbi occupied numerous Rabbinic posts and enjoyed friends and admirers from around the world. They felt his genuine kindness, passion and interest in their lives.

In his personal life, we witnessed how he overcame many of life’s challenges that confronted him. He was an exemplary model of fortitude and tenacity. His memory will remain a pillar of hope and a source of inspiration.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
