National Seminar was truly an uplifting experience! As an educator, I focused on learning about what direction HMA is going in the area of education. It is exciting to see the work that is coming from the national board! Area leaders had the opportunity to attend a luncheon meeting at which our current President-Elect Greig Ashurst reported on attending state music educator conferences and All-State events. At these events, they set up The Handbell Playground. This video (which can be found on the HMA website in the “For Educator’s” area) explains what happens in The Handbell Playground.

In addition to hearing about The Handbell Playground, I participated in many sessions touching on various aspects of handbells in schools. One of those sessions was specifically about adjudications and assessments in the handbell program. Did you know that there is a sample adjudication form rubric on the HMA website? The resources I became aware of are limitless!
Finally, I enjoyed ringing! From listening to fantastic concerts to actually picking up bells and chimes and ringing in the advanced ringing track, I was filled to the brim with the sounds of ringing! I left National Seminar with joy in my heart as I met new friends, and connected with old friends. It was an incredible week of learning, collaborating, networking, and ringing!
Please take the time to check out the resources available to all of us on the HMA website (www.handbellmusicians.org). Also, as always, if you have any questions, please reach out to any of us on the board. We are here to help in any way we can!

Hello friends!
I hope everyone has had a fantastic summer. One of my highlights was attending National Seminar in Irving, Texas. It was wonderful to connect to handbell friends and learn more about all the Education resources the National office has been putting together. As Marci mentioned, there are great resources out there on the HMA website!

As we are moving into the Fall, I hope teachers and students are looking forward to coming back to school. We do have sets of bells available in our loan program, so feel free to reach out to education.area12@handbellmusicians.org if you are interested in borrowing a set of bells or chimes to start a handbell program at your school.
And I am also very excited to announce that Area 12 will be offering a Youth Handbell Conference in Fall 2024. Please Save the Date for:

I have a few exciting announcements for handbell enthusiasts in Southern California,
But first…Please enjoy this concert recording from earlier this Summer. Alex Guebert and I are so proud of our handbell students’ fine efforts this past season. This concert is a culmination and celebration of a lot of hard work. Many of our college students will go on to direct handbell ensembles at their future church and school jobs - this concert recording even features two original student compositions. Enjoy: https://youtu.be/zjX9ecSXxxI

Save the date (Spring 2024 handbell events in Southern California):
-
Concordia’s annual Young Ringers Festival for middle school handbell ensembles will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024. The half-day event includes adjudication, a mass ring, afternoon concert and other activities.
-
Concordia’s annual Handbell Invitational will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024. This popular event is focused toward high school handbell ensembles, but we typically have a strong presence of adult ringers from community and church ensembles as well. The half-day event culminates in an afternoon public concert and mass ring.
More info and registration details will be released next month. Both events will be held at Concordia University Irvine. If you are interested in learning more or would like to reserve a space in advance for your ensemble, feel free to contact me directly at Erik.der@cui.edu or lametro.area12@handbellmusicians.org.
And in other news…
Concordia is hosting Zenith, a new handbell ensemble comprised of expert ringers, for their inaugural performance on Saturday, August 5. Led by Alex Guebert and Matthew Compton, this unique double ensemble is made up of 30 musicians from across North America (including many from Area 12!). The title of their inaugural concert is “Sonic Alchemy” and will feature a wide range of virtuosic music including original compositions, classical transcriptions, movie scores, and so much more.

My name is Cindy Ksiazek and I am the new NorCal Representative. I have played handbells since I was 16 and have attended an International Symposium, a national conference and many Area 12 conferences. I am a member of the Carillons handbell choir in Redding, CA. We host the Redding Handbell Festival each year in October. As part of the Carillons bell choir, I helped to start a bell choir in Wittenberg, Germany. I am a Food Service Director for an elementary school district in Redding and have a passion for being sure that our students always have a great nutritious meal for breakfast and lunch every day. I have 3 children and 4 grandchildren that I enjoy spending time with.
I am available to answer any question that people may have regarding bell choirs and activities in the NorCal region. If I don't have the answer, I will find it for you. If any of the NorCal area bell choirs have upcoming events, please let me know so that I can be sure to spread the information. The Redding Handbell Festival will take place this year on October 21, 2023. This year's massed director is Ellie Hodder. For information regarding the Redding Handbell Festival, email Nancy Schmitt at schmitt@awwwsome.com.

Intro To Massed Ringing Workshop
|
Ever been interested in attending a big festival, but it seems too intimidating? Or do you want to brush up on your ringing skills after taking the summer off? Harmony Handbells (community group in Las Vegas) is hosting a workshop that includes massed ringing of level 1 music along with classes on basic techniques, rhythms, weaving, and even bell trees. Registration is only $5 per person and you are not expected to have learned the massed ring music in advance. The day ends with a "sharing session" where we will play the massed ring pieces along with any groups or individuals who want to present a solo piece. This is a no pressure situation. Come enjoy and learn! The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 9, from 8:30-4:00 at First Christian Church (101 S Rancho Dr, Las Vegas, NV). Registration info is available at harmonyhandbells.com/workshop. Please reach out if you have any questions.

As I write this, I can see from my window that the snow has almost — but not quite — disappeared from the top of the San Gabriel Mountains. I don’t expect it to last much longer with these 100º+ temperatures we’ve been having lately! I do hope you have all been keeping cool in this heat.
This month, I have some news as well as a request.
First the news: we have dates for the 2024 SoCal Spring Ring! Please mark your calendar for Friday & Saturday May 3 & 4. We will once again be hosted by St. Thomas More Church in Oceanside, with SoCal’s own Barbara Meinke leading Bronze Vision and massed ringing. As always, the event will culminate with a public concert. Information and registration forms will be available this fall, so watch this space!

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
To learn more about the responsibilities and procedures for participating in this program, click here.
