Everyday Essential Oils for aches, pains, and bruises
Last month I started my four-part series on essential oils that I use every day. The first part of the series introduced you to the different ways essential oils are harvested and extracted, along with some of the byproducts of the manufacturing process.
This month, I discuss some of the essential oils I use in one of my favorite formulations. Weekend Warrior Salve! I often find myself very active on the weekends, boating, gardening, taking long walks, or doing some long-overdue cleaning. When I get back to my routine of working at a computer most of the day, I often find a few achy spots, bruises, or areas of muscle soreness. It's then that I apply my Weekend Warrior Salve and rub it into all the affected areas. Within about 20 minutes, I find relief that lasts several hours.
I have used this formula for several years and use it on friends, family, and those who request it, and they all are surprised when they see how effective it is. I recently underwent a procedure that was supposed to cause much bruising. After the procedure, I immediately started putting on my salve, but I accidentally missed an area. Two days after the procedure, I noticed a marked difference in the area that got the salve and the one that did not. The place I missed was deeply bruised, the area I applied it to was hardly showing any bruising at all. Almost all the bruising had started to yellow and fade within a week. The bonus is that the salve also provided a great deal of relief from the pain. I would notice that after about 4 hours, I would need to reapply it.
So, I bet you are wondering what is in this wonderfully natural, magical formula? Let me break it down for you:
Vitis vinifera (Grapeseed oil), Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax (Cera Ballina), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), and Essential oils of Arnica montana, Zingiber officinale (Ginger) Oil, Mentha x Piperita (Peppermint), Piper Nigrum (Black Pepper), Cupressus sempervirens var. stricta (Cypress), & Juniperus communis (Juniper Berry).
The first two ingredients are what make it an oil-based salve. I chose grapeseed oil as the carrier oil because of its antioxidant qualities and high absorbency. Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax is processed beeswax to make it less waxy and smoother during application. Tocopherol is an antioxidant with some beneficial vitamins. Here comes the good stuff.
The Arnica montana I use is not a maceration of the arnica flowers soaked in oil. Instead, it is a CO2 extraction that leaves much more of the sesquiterpene lactones (4.2%) and helenalin - two powerful anti-inflammatories ideal for soft tissue aches and pains like muscular sprains, muscle, and joint inflammation, bruises, and many arthritic conditions. It is not recommended to use greater than 1% because of its high concentration of active constituents. This ingredient gives the salve a synergistic boost to help with the pain and inflammation, and bruising.
Zingiber officinale (Ginger) essential oil is often thought of for gastrointestinal discomfort, and it works wonders for this issue. It also works well for arthritis pain and bruises due to its sesquiterpenes of zingiberene, alpha-curcumin, bisabolone, and farnesene. Sesquiterpenes are anti-inflammatory and act as antioxidants assisting in cellular repair. Interestingly, these same chemical compounds give Ginger essential oil its strong odor due to the low volatility of the molecules.
Mentha x Piperita (Peppermint) essential oil is one of my favorites to breathe when I feel nauseous. It always makes my stomach settle and feel better. However, too much peppermint can cause nausea, headache, and watery eyes. But, used at the right level, it can give sore muscles and bruises some relief through its anesthetic constituents of 1,8 cineole and phenols of thymol and carvacrol. So, when I am bruised, this quality and the cooling sensation of peppermint oil help ease some of the pain.
Piper Nigrum Black pepper is a powerhouse of essential oil. I was worried about using it on my skin when I first heard about it, believing it would 'burn' me. When I learned about the fantastic properties of the essential oil, I wanted to put it all over myself. Black pepper is an excellent analgesic, antioxidant, antispasmodic, rubefacient (brings blood vessels to the surface), and vasodilator. Although it has numerous other properties, these are the ones that make it great for muscle pain, bruising, and healing. It can cause some skin irritation and should be used with care. I only use 0.1% in my formulation.
Cupressus sempervirens var. stricta (Cypress) essential oil has a beautiful, opening aroma. It is used in many household products and is often considered a clean, refreshing smell from its camphor constituent. Topically, cypress essential oil can help circulation, bruising, swelling, and fluid retention. All of which can occur when you have any cellular damage.
Juniperus communis (Juniper Berry or Juniper) essential oil is another hidden gem of an essential oil. It is a beautiful essential oil to use as an expectorant and aquaretic diuretic, which can help with swelling. However, it should be used with caution if certain underlying health conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, pregnancy, hypertension, hypotension, GI disorders, and seizures.
Are you starting to understand how these essential oils work in synergy to create this great salve? I hope so! A lot of thought and work goes into making formularies that are synergistic and support healing. If you have any questions about this product, don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Since I make products upon order, I can always modify an ingredient if you are concerned. I would love to have you try it out or purchase as a much appreciated Mother's Day gift, and spread the word about these incredible essential oils!

The Island Where People Forget to Die
By Dan Buettner
This is a terrific article about ALL the things that help boost longevity. Interviewing a Greek war veteran named Stamatis Moraitis, who was diagnosed with end stage lung cancer in his mid 60's. He left the US and went back to his homeland in Ikaria, where he could be buried with his ancestors in a cemetery shaded by oak trees that overlooked the Aegean Sea.
And then a funny thing happened. He started to feel better. He is still alive today, cancer free, at age 102.
Turns out island life is good for you.
A combination of waking up when you feel like it, working in the vineyards until midafternoon, eating a breakfast of goat’s milk, wine, sage tea or coffee, honey and bread, a lunch of beans (lentils, garbanzos), potatoes, greens (fennel, dandelion or a spinachlike green called horta) and whatever seasonal vegetables your garden produced; dinner of bread and goat’s milk and at Christmas and Easter, slaughtering the family pig and enjoying small portions of larded pork for the next several months, and then taking a long nap (regular napping — at least three days weekly — was associated with a 37 percent reduction in coronary heart disease) and in the evenings, walking to the local tavern, playing dominoes past midnight, tables pushed aside and the dining room became a dance floor, with people locking arms and kick-dancing to Greek music ALL contribute to longevity.
People pool their money and buy food and wine. If there is money left over, they give it to the poor. It’s not a ‘me’ place. It’s an ‘us’ place.”
Local “mountain tea,” made from dried herbs endemic to the island, is enjoyed as an end-of-the-day cocktail including wild marjoram, sage (flaskomilia), a type of mint tea (fliskouni), rosemary and a drink made from boiling dandelion leaves and adding a little lemon. “People here think they’re drinking a comforting beverage, but they all double as medicine,”
Wild mint fights gingivitis and gastrointestinal disorders; rosemary is used as a remedy for gout; artemisia is thought to improve blood circulation. Turns out these are rich sources of polyphenols, they showed strong antioxidant properties. Most of these herbs also contained mild diuretics. Doctors often use diuretics to treat hypertension — perhaps by drinking tea nightly, Ikarians have gently lowered their blood pressure throughout their lives.
This is the “blue zone.” Starting in 2002, they have identified three other populations around the world where people live measurably longer lives than everyone else. The world’s longest-lived women are found on the island of Okinawa. On Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, they discovered a population of 100,000 mestizos with a lower-than-normal rate of middle-age mortality. And in Loma Linda, Calif., they identified a population of Seventh-day Adventists in which most of the adherents’ life expectancy exceeded Americans.
And one other thing...
There’s no word in Greek for privacy”
“When everyone knows everyone else’s business, you get a feeling of connection and security. The lack of privacy is actually good, because it puts a check on people who don’t want to be caught or who do something to embarrass their family. If your kids misbehave, your neighbor has no problem disciplining them. There is less crime, not because of good policing, but because of the risk of shaming the family.
Food for thought...

Treatment for Covid

If you do test positive for Covid, it is important to remember that there IS treatment available.
Paxlovid is an oral antiviral pill that can be taken at home to help keep high-risk patients from getting so sick that they need to be hospitalized. So, if you test positive for the coronavirus (and your doctor writes you a prescription), you can take pills at home and lower your risk of going to the hospital.
It is becoming more readily available, but you may still have to push your doctor to prescribe.

Support those defending their families and homes in Ukraine!
Our main focus is to provide medical supplies, trauma kits, and other urgent humanitarian needs to front line units.
(Jen's Note)
This organization was created by a California National Guardsman fighter pilot who was training Ukrainian Fighter pilots when he met his wife in Ukraine, this gives them a unique access to what is actually needed on the ground and how to get it into the right hands...
We focus on supplying humanitarian aid to front line units, be they Ukrainian military or militia, in the form of urgent medical supplies, trauma kits, or other urgent needs.
We are working with US based companies to receive donations of medical supplies and transport them into theater. We are also working with contacts in Poland and other EU countries to locally purchase supplies and ship into Ukraine. Once inside Ukraine, we work through our same network of friends and professional associates to make sure materials get to where they are needed most.

May Day is one of the most beautiful days in Annapolis. On May 1st the doors of homes and businesses in our centuries-old City of Annapolis are adorned with baskets full of fresh-cut flowers and colorful ribbons. If you haven't yet treated yourself to a stroll along the streets of Annapolis' Historic District on this day of days, this is the year to indulge.
Be sure to take plenty of photos of the colorful baskets and post them to social media using the hashtags #maydayannapolis2022 and #67thannapolismayday.
What began as a Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne beautification project in 1956 has grown into a tradition in which residents and business owners compete for winning ribbons and an invitation to the Garden Club's Annual Tea.
The 67th annual May basket competition, sponsored by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne, will be held Sunday, May 1 in celebration of May Day. Residents and merchants in the Historic District, and parts of Murray Hill, are encouraged to arrange baskets of fresh-cut flowers to display outside their homes and businesses. Residential arrangements must be in baskets and include a card indicating the name of the participant; merchants can use a container that reflects an element of their business. All displays must be out by 11:00 a.m. on May 1 for judging by garden club members.

EAT MORE BEANS!
In a survey of the diet of 673 Ikarians (blue zone residents that live well into their 100's). It's found that subjects consumed about six times as many beans a day as Americans, ate fish twice a week and meat five times a month, drank on average two to three cups of coffee a day and took in about a quarter as much refined sugar — the elderly did not like soda. She also discovered they were consuming high levels of olive oil along with two to four glasses of wine a day.
Here's a great recipe to get more beans into your meals!
