August Beekeeping Tips

In the Hive

August can see a second smaller swarm season.

The bee population begins to diminish faster than it is growing, the bood area may contract. Make sure to treat the Varroa mite population that usually peaks in August or September.

Inspection

Inspecting hives should be especially thorough, particularly for pests and diseases. Your colonies should be able to take on the fall honey flow and then overwinter successfully.

Nutrition

August is the month when colonies begin preparation for winter. Make sure colonies are healthy.
