The Ally: Heartfelt Gratitude for Two Good Men

The world lost two wonderful men in the past few days. Larry Swearengen died at home on May 14. Larry worked for the Department of Mental Health, was NAMI's executive director, and directed Warren Yazoo Mental Health Center. Larry's commitment to community-based care and partnering with people receiving services inspired me when my husband and I moved to Mississippi in the mid-1990s. He also made me laugh. Over and over. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 3, 2023, at St. Columb's Episcopal Church in Ridgeland, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. and concluding with a reception in the Parish Hall.

Rankin County Youth Court Judge Thomas Broome died on May 21 after a brief illness. He cared so much about children and families. He was also a thoughtful and wise judge. "A celebration of life service and reception will be held on June 10, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Muse Center at 515 Country Place Parkway in Pearl. A graveside service will be conducted on June 9 at 2:30 p.m. at Bay Springs Cemetery, 368 Mississippi Highway 18 in Bay Springs," according to the State of Mississippi Judiciary website.

It's so hard to lose one good person. It's even harder to lose two good men who made such a difference. May we all thoughtfully remember them, comfort their families and friends, and, when we are ready, attempt to follow in their footsteps.
