At Vine Hill, our little bears (530 of them!) are aged 4-11. Appropriate and expected behavior is taught and encouraged all day every day. However, since we are working with developing children, we sometimes experience undesirable behavior. SVUSD is committed to teaching our students how to behave appropriately, and how to coexist and grow with a wide variety of peers, using a progressive discipline model. It is a normal part of child development to “try on” certain behaviors. At Vine Hill, staff work to help students reflect on the effect their behavior may have on others, and how to make better choices in social situations.
Sometimes, an inappropriate incident or two with peers is referred to as “bullying” or a child may be considered a “bully” or “bad kid”. In truth, “bullying” is defined as repeated aggressive behavior characterized by a power imbalance and the intent to cause harm. Rarely, if ever, does this occur since all behavior incidents are taken seriously, and addressed before a bullying situation can exist. However, if we have a situation that rises to the level of bullying, we have steps in place to address that, as you can see from our progressive discipline response plan.
We ask that you show grace with our students, just as you would hope other families would give to your child if they make a mistake. They are all learning and growing and we are committed to helping them become the best version of themselves. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Tracey Neilsen, Principal
