Department Highlight: Senior Vice President's Office Part 1

As we look ahead to the next academic year, we remain committed to providing top-tier service and support for the growing university and position of Business Affairs for change readiness.

To support this commitment, we have been building capacity by expanding the Senior Vice President (SVP) Office team to work collaboratively with units throughout the system, university, and division and enhance support for specialized services.

Over the past few years, we have experienced exponential growth within Business Affairs including:

  • Created a central communications team
  • Established divisional human resources business partners
  • Evolved the function formerly known as campus audit into a governance, risk, and compliance resource for the division and institution
  • Formed a strategic project team within the SVP office

This two-part Department Highlight will help you get to know these teams and familiarize yourself with the projects and initiatives they oversee. In part one, we focus on the SVP Office strategic project team and quality assurance and financial compliance. Be sure to check out the next edition for part two, where we will introduce you to the Business Affairs communication team, HR business partners, and administrative support.

SVP Office Strategic Project Team

The SVP Strategic Project team is a dynamic group of individuals who collaborate with departments and campus constituents on large-scale projects, including strategic plan alignment with key performance indicators (KPIs), developing shared governance for a division process improvement model, and diversity, equity, and inclusion action plan.

Kimberly Case-Nichols, Chief of Staff

Kim represents Business Affairs on cross-functional campus committees and task forces and leads division initiatives such as the Business Affairs strategic plan and business process improvement. Kim has been with UNLV since 2010, and has served as the director of maintenance for UNLV Student Affairs and as executive director of space and facilities management for Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine. Kim believes in taking a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive approach to aligning business processes to UNLV’s top tier 2.0 mission and initiatives.

Alex Nikolich, Senior Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives

Alex provides high-level support for short-term and long-range strategic initiatives that support the entire institution. Alex's immediate initiatives include the institutional Compliance Advisory Committee, the UNLV Research Foundation, and leading the strategic analysis of various institutional opportunities.

Effective July 1, Sarath began working in a part-time capacity while she pursues her Ph.D. in higher education administration at UNLV. Sarath collaborates with NSHE and university partners to support the System’s Computing Services enterprise management strategy and co-leads complex initiatives, including the NSHE research operations and maintenance reporting project and Workday security realignment and optimization program. Sarath is certified as a Prosci change management professional and is training to become a search advocate.

Quality Assurance and Financial Compliance

The Quality Assurance and Financial Compliance function provides risk assessments, conducts internal investigations, and provides guidance on developing a proactive, risk-based approach for integrating compliance into our standard operating procedures, and ensuring that we effectively document our compliance efforts.

Sheila leads compliance and quality assurance efforts for campus to ensure adherence to state, federal and Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) regulations, policies, and procedures associated with financial and business processes. She conducts internal reviews of business processes, investigations, and assessments related to financial compliance and the university’s system of internal control. No Such Thing as a Perfect Parent

Active Assailant Training Follow-Up

University Police Services conducted an active assailant training on July 28. There were technical difficulties that persisted and attendees' patience was greatly appreciated as UNLV values employees' time. University Police Services delivered an informative and potentially life saving presentation with great attention to detail in an effort to mitigate the very challenges encountered. Nonetheless, due to the nature of their work, last minute changes were required.

The information presented during the training is relevant, beneficial guidance for the community. Attendee feedback indicated that the training was not what many participants were expecting, however, its contents are vital to ensure the campus community is prepared in the event of an active assailant situation.

As a follow up, here is the PowerPoint presentation from the active assailant training. The FBI Run Hide Fight video can be found here, along with a demonstration of how many weapons one person can carry. Additionally, the Campus Emergency Procedures guide, campus Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)and the Campus Services Building fire safety plan are available for review as well.

All feedback is welcome and appreciated as maintaining the safety integrity of UNLV's campus community continues to be University Police Services' focus.
