Issue 6: Student Account Management

Greetings!

Today's tip helps you understand how to access your UMD Financial Services account and understand charges.

Billpay.umd.edu is the website to access your financial account, make payments, and request refunds.

The billing and payment FAQs are very helpful in answering questions such as:

• When is my bill due?
• How do I add a parent to make a payment?
• What are acceptable payment methods and how do I wire money?
• What payment plans are offered?
• What are the costs and fees?

To access your account click here.

Click "View Current Account Details."

Click on “Student Log In”, and enter your Directory ID and password. It will bring up the following screen.

Click on the “Make a Payment” button. This is where you will select the amount that you want to pay on your account. If you wish to pay the full amount of your account, make sure the number you input here matches the total account balance on your student account activity details page.

The final step is to input your method of payment. There is a processing fee for credit or debit cards. When everything is filled out, click submit. In two or three days, your payment should show up on your student account inquiry page.

Please note that some fees will not appear on your account until later in February (i.e., SHIP insurance, if applicable). Even if you have already paid your student account, please remember to log in each month and review for any new charges. It is always to your advantage to pay your account charges promptly as this will avoid any late payment charges. If you have questions about your billing statement contact billtalk@umd.edu.

Payment Methods

The University accepts a variety of payment methods such as online check payments, credit cards and international transfers. Flywire is the official provider used for all international payments. Due to the increased fraudulent activity, traditional wire transfers are not accepted.

Billing Schedule/due dates

A student bill is generated on the 25th day of every month (viewable online the 26th) and is due on the 20th day of the proceeding month. Click here for information about Student Financial Services and Cashiering billing deadlines

Terp payment plan

The Terp Payment Plan (TPP) is a service that allows you to make monthly payments over a 3 or 4 month schedule over the course of the semester. Read more about the plan details and sign up here.

Payment plan details:

• Enrollment fee is $45 (non-refundable) per semester plan.
• You can include most university charges: tuition, course fees, on-campus housing plans, meal plan, parking permit, health insurance, orientation charges, and differential tuition
• Payments must be made to Nelnet to count towards your monthly payment. (Not to the school directly)  
• Enrollment is required each semester

International Student Fee 

The University of Maryland (UMD) charges a fee of $125 per semester for all enrolled students requiring an I-20/DS-2019 issued by the university. Students enrolled in an academic program operating on the 12-week calendar, who require an I-20/DS-2019 issued by the university, will be charged a fee of $62.50 per term. UMD uses the revenue from this fee to enhance support for our international students to include improved academic support, expanded assistance for students transitioning to the U.S., and international student-focused cultural events to foster an engaged, supportive community.



In addition to our weekly tip of the week, the ISSS online orientation is live. All F-1/J-1 international students who are new to UMD should complete the online International Student Orientation by January 20th, 2024.

On December 11, ISSS will launch the “enrollment intent form”.  This form gathers your arrival information or you need to defer.  All students who have I-20/DS-2019 with a Spring 2025 arrival date are required to complete this form by December 20. The form will be added to the ISSS iTerp checklist.
