Estelle Engelskirchen wins big in MCAL swim finals and breaks a decades-old school swim record
|
Marin I-J excerpt April 29, 2023
Girls Swimming by Holly Woolard
"San Rafael’s Estelle Engelskirchen was a double winner and, more importantly, achieved a goal she’s had since sixth grade: set the school record in the 200 free. Engelskirchen clocked a winning time of 1:57.34 to better the mark set by Nancy Placak in 1977.
“Our record board is just covered with the Placaks,” said Engelskirchen. “It’s nice to have them as encouragements, but it’s also nice to make a little more progress.”
The Bulldogs’ star of the day also took first in the 500 free with a personal best time of 5:17.28 for a 3-second improvement from qualifying. Although Engelskirchen was admittedly nervous during Friday’s prelims and went out too fast in her races, she made the most of her final MCAL meet a day later.
“I said ‘I know these girls, I know this is my last MCALs,'” said Engelskirchen, who hopes to swim at either Cal Poly or the University of California Santa Barbara next year. “I’m just going to have fun, win or lose, and I think that calmed my nerves.”"
