NM Counties Well Represented at NACo Legislative Conference in DC

Above Carolyn Cage, President Eddy County Sheriff Mark Cage, NMC Ex. Director Joy Esparsen, General Counsel Grace Philips, and Santa Fe County Clerk Katharine Clark along with 50+ other NM county elected officials and county staff.

NMC General Counsel Grace Philips proposed an interim policy resolution on behalf of the NACo Health Steering Committee in support of initiatives to eliminate Hepatitis C which passed!

Infant Surrender Device in Your Community

Local entities can receive a $10,000 grant from DFA LGD to install an infant surrender box. It is a secure and anonymous way for a mother in crisis to legally surrender her newborn as permitted by NM law. If interested, please contact Rural Ombudsman Dr. Shanna Sasser, at shanna.sasser@dfa.nm.gov.

NM Mortgage Finance Authority Funding for Fire-affected Counties

The New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority has $3 million in funding available to address urgent and long-term housing recovery needs in six fire-affected counties. The funding is designated for low- and moderate-income households in Colfax, Lincoln, Mora, Sandoval, San Miguel and Valencia counties. Visit our website for more information on the Notice of Funding Availability.

NACo: Bipartisan Legislation Introduced in US House to Increase Transparency of Mail-in Ballots

The Vote by Mail Tracking Act would require mail-in ballots to include USPS tracking barcodes, meet USPS design requirements and standards and include an Official Election Mail logo.

USDA Rural Development Rural Utilities Service is providing a three-day workshop for those interested in applying for ReConnect Program funding which offers loans, grants, & loan/grant combos to facilitate deployment for broadband access in rural areas.

The NM legislative session adjourned at noon. Highlighted are the key initiatives that have passed both houses:

  • Detention & Corrections Recruitment - $25 Million
  • Firefighter & EMT Recruitment - $25 Million
  • EMS Bureau - $11 Million with contingency of SB151 passing to provide future recurring revenue – Passed, pending signature by the Governor
  • Courthouse Funding - $10 Million + $15 Million for Bernalillo County
  • Detention Reimbursement - $5 Million
  • DoIT 700 Mhtz Radios - $2.5 Million

SJR16: County Elected Officials Salary Cap – Passed, Will be on the ballot in November

HB236: PERA Public Safety Return to Work – Passed, pending signature by the Governor

SB148: Removal of TRD Administrative Fees – Passed with delayed implementation and phase out ($26 Million for counties), pending signature by the Governor.
