DOM PRO-cess supports community building, skills development, mentorship, and scholarship for clinician-educators in the UCSF Department of Medicine. In this newsletter, we highlight our roles as mentors, coaches, advisors, and sponsors in supporting trainees at times of transition (e.g., in starting medical school, clerkships, residency, or fellowship). We spotlight upcoming events, conferences, and opportunities.

Clinician-educators have many roles as mentor, coach, advisor, and sponsor. These roles are especially important during transition periods for our trainees. Below we are highlighting two recent articles and a podcast focusing on coaching in medical education.
Coaching Medical Students: UCSF medicine resident Brian Bakke, MD and Vice Dean for Education Karen Hauer MD, PhD recently published a qualitative study exploring medical student perspectives in their longitudinal relationships with their Bridges Coaches. Main themes included: 1) longitudinal nature of the relationships developed and strengthened over years, 2) importance of mentoring from an experienced coach in a non-evaluative role, 3) guided advice and feedback and 4) goal-oriented approach to learning.

Transition to Residency: Faculty from NYU created a bridge coaching program (the Transition to Residency Advantage coaching program) in which medical students work with a coach from the match through their first year of residency. In this paper the authors described scaffolded coaching at different stages of professional growth and identity formation. The findings underscored the importance of an individualized, holistic approach to coaching with emphasis on supporting learners’ development of self-awareness, self-regulated learning, and goal setting while also providing safe spaces for vulnerability.

Coaching in Fellowships: The Association of Critical Care Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Medical Education Podcast interviewed physicians from the UCSF Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine including James Frank, MD, MA, Lekshmi Santhosh, MD, MAEd, Leslie Seijo, MD and Narges Alipanah-Lechner, MD on coaching definitions, roles, and relationships across medical education.

The Center for Faculty Educators (CFE) has revised and enhanced their faculty development programs and website. The workshops and resources are a great way for all faculty who teach and supervise learners to improve their skills and promote supportive and inclusive learning environments. This year-long faculty development program welcomes faculty who wish to make education a primary area of responsibility, e.g., course and clinical education leadership, participation in educational committees, and education scholarship. Faculty with diverse life experience whose passion for teaching, research, and/or service has prepared them to contribute to building outstanding, innovative education programs that train health professionals to meet patients’ and populations’ health care needs are encouraged to apply.

Key points about the program:

Mission: To prepare and build a community of educators at UCSF committed to a scholarly approach to education, contributing to education scholarship, and advancing equity and justice in health professions education.

Program goals: Upon completion, participants will possess skills in teaching, curriculum development, educational scholarship, and education leadership with an anti-oppressive framing.

Structure: Up to 14 scholars are selected for the one-year program that runs from September 10, 2024, to early September 2025. The program consists of weekly Tuesday afternoon seminars, workshops, and a curricular innovation and/or education research project with the expectation of dissemination of the project through presentation and/or publication. The majority of weekly sessions are on Zoom. We will have a face-to-face meeting early on and schedule others in a way that works for the cohort. Note: There will be limited formal meetings in July and August of 2025 so that scholars can work independently on their projects in preparation for graduation.
Application Deadline: March 18, 2024.
Notification of acceptance: April 15-May 1, 2024

Voices of Your Colleagues: Educator Career Paths Panel
DOM PRO-cess “Voices of Your Colleagues: Educator Career Paths” workshop in October featured a panel of clinician educators, including Dr. Justin Sewell, PhD, MPH, Dr. Lisa Ochoa-Frongia, and Dr. Yalda Shahram, who shared stories and advice on the importance of identifying as a clinician educator.
This workshop will be offered periodically and is relevant for all faculty who are looking for inspiration and advice around career next steps. Please see the complete workshop description using the link below.

Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression in Action Through Mentorship
The workshop was co-led by Dr. Denise Davis, Professor of Medicine at the San Francisco VA, and VP of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for the Academy of Communication in Healthcare, and Dr. Stephanie Rennke, Professor of Medicine, Associate Director of PRO-cess.
