FROM THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
In early June, we will bid adieu to Rachel Collins, Director of Library Services. We aren’t ready to say goodbye, but we are pleased to support the next part of her journey as she ventures west with her partner for his job.

Rachel’s been part of our team since February 2016, coming to Shorewood Public Library as her “dream job.” During her time, she has guided the library through pivotal work that will ensure it continues to excel even after Rachel departs. Since 2016 under Rachel’s leadership, the Shorewood Public Library:

  • Completed a strategic planning process, grounding the library in a mission, vision, and set of values that impacts all we do
  • Accepted the Lange Bequest and worked to ensure that it will serve library users for generations to come
  • Completed a Renovation Master Plan, paving the way for a meaningful renovation in 2023-2024
  • Provided educational opportunities and space for productive conversations with the public, staff, and trustees around issues of equity and racism, resulting in creation of a formal Equity Commitment with clear annual objectives

Rachel will be sincerely missed. Please stop in and say your hellos and goodbyes before Thursday, June 9th!

LIBRARY RENOVATION TIMELINE UPDATE
The Shorewood Public Library will temporarily pause the library renovation process due to the resignation of Rachel Collins, the Director of Library Services. The library board is committed to maintaining the momentum of the project, and the renovation process will resume as soon as the new director joins the team, meets the community, and becomes familiarized with the renovation initiative. The revised timeline has construction proposed to start in January 2024, and the renovation completed by July 2024.
FREE PERIOD PRODUCTS NOW AVAILABLE
We are happy to share that the library has now installed free menstrual product dispensers in the women's and gender neutral bathrooms in the library to help support menstrual equity.

We want to extend our thanks to former library clerk Mia for her hard work on this initiative and to the Friends of Shorewood Public Library for support in funding this new project.

WHAT WE'RE READING

What does E.T., 80s music, and demonic possession have in common? They're all part of Grady Hendrix's fun (yet somewhat gory) horror novel, My Best Friend's Exorcism. Closely following Abby Rivers and Gretchen Lang's friendship from fourth grade and beyond, Hendrix not only explores the trials and tribulations of high school, but also the challenges of your best friend being occupied by an evil, supernatural force. My Best Friend's Exorcism blends the borders of adult and young adult fiction, and is an overall enjoyable, quick read.

Venture to early 19th century Edinburgh, Scotland with the independent, highly intelligent, and curious teenaged Hazel Sinnett. Fascinated with the natural sciences since childhood, Hazel gravitates toward the medical field dominated by privileged men. She finds a way to attend the Royal Edinburgh Anatomist’s Society, the leading medical school of the day, and learns more than she ever thought she would. Part mystery, part romance, and fully historical fiction.

The Dark Queens takes readers back to the 6th century Merovingian empire, where two rival queens defied convention and changed the landscape of early medieval Europe. Spanish Princess Brunhild and enslaved Fredegund couldn't have had more different beginnings before becoming royal sisters-in-law and learning to politick with the best of them. Puhak's narrative nonfiction is filled with scandal and sensation as she weaves together their nearly forgotten story, making for a fascinating feminist history.
