This Sunday we will mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, which on November 11, 1918, brought an end to World War I. We will remember veterans of all wars, holding them in our prayers along with their families and all whose lives have been touched by the ravages of conflict between and within nations. Together we will recommit ourselves to striving for the peace of Christ in God's kingdom come.

We also invite the special participation of children in worship this Sunday, as we do on the second Sunday of each month. Sunday School students will lead us in worship at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. through the roles of beadle and lay liturgist. A ll children who otherwise attend Sunday School on the fourth floor (ages three through fifth grade) will instead stay with their parents as they attend worship and will depart for their classrooms before the sermon begins.

In music and the spoken word we will commemorate—this Friday evening, November 9—the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

This evening we will pause to listen to choral works by Elgar, Bainton, Tavener, and Mealor—presented by the Fourth Church Choral Society—along with poems and letters written by soldiers in the war.

This moving performance will be preceded by a 6:30 p.m. pre-concert lecture by Claudia Boatright on “Remembering the Great War.”

The election results are in, and our information channels are full of the resulting analysis. What do we do with that, and where do we go from here?

How, for instance, can we rebuild Americans’ faith in mediating institutions such as political parties, the media, and interest groups?

How might we call for civility and make space for strong disagreement?

Join us on Thursday evening, November 29 as we host one of our Michigan Avenue Forums to explore these questions with Robert Boatright. Dr. Boatright will bring his presentation “The Impact of the 2018 Election: Beachcombing after the Wave” and share insights from his work as professor of political science at Clark University and Director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse.
