NATIONAL TEQUILA DAY | JULY 24
On July 24th, commemorate National Tequila Day with a little lime and salt. Mix up a Margarita, Paloma, or a Mamasita to celebrate the day! People have been making Tequila for centuries, and it was once known as mezcal wine.
In fact, Tequila is mezcal, but mezcal isn’t Tequila. That’s because Tequila is distilled from a specific type of agave plant. Also, the law protects its production. Take a sip, and we’ll travel into Tequila’s history.
Tequila History
It all started around the 16th century. Cortez arrived on the North American continent with his Spanish conquistadors. They didn’t care much for the fermented mezcal wine served to them. However, the Spanish introduced copper stills to the population. Enter the distilling process.
Now, our story takes us to Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. Located in a valley west of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, the town made a name for themselves by distilling Blue Agave. Even though a variety of succulents in Mexico produce mezcal, only one delivers the nectar to distill Tequila. Blue Agave grows in the highland region. Indeed, the unique growing conditions contribute to a larger size and sweeter tasting agave. In contrast, agave grown in the lowland regions taste and smell more herbal.
In Mexico, the law protects the production of Tequila. The rule states Tequila is only Tequila if it is made within Jalisco. Additionally, the law limits production to regions in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. However, the same ingredients distilled anywhere else cannot be labeled Tequila.
Interestingly, many names in the tequila business today were the very first commercial producers of Tequila. For example, José Antonio Cuervo held the first license for making the favored beverage. He kept a well-known company, too. Two other names include Don Cenobio Sauza and Félix López, whose businesses continue in some form today.
Equally enjoyed in cocktails such as the margarita or tequila sunrise, connoisseurs savor a good tequila like a good whiskey. As a result, savvy drinkers experience the smooth renaissance of Tequila. Surprisingly, it’s not the firewater they remember from their youth.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
Fig and Goat Cheese Flatbread
With fig season being short and oh so sweet, this recipe is a seasonal favorite and current staple for Market Umbrella staff. Being able to source half the ingredients from market, we might as well call this a summer market flatbread. With few ingredients, little preparation time, and figs, this recipe is a must try!
Ingredients
- 1 flatbread (store bought or homemade)
- 2 onions
- 2 oz of goat cheese
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- ¼ pint of figs
Directions
Chop onions, caramelize by sauteing on medium heat with 2 teaspoons of olive oil for 30-60 minutes, stirring often.
Prepare flatbread by brushing with remaining olive oil, layer caramelized onions, goat cheese, chopped figs. Bake at 425° F for 10 minutes.
Ta da! You have a delicious summer market flatbread. And if you're really trying to maximize your market ingredients, drizzle with honey, and/or garnish with bee pollen. DELISH!

We’ve got it Fig-ured Out!
Figs are here y’all, but be warned - the season is just as short as it is sweet. If you’re a fig lover like us, get ‘em while you can. Fresh figs should be plump and soft, without bruising or splits and are most flavorful when served at room temperature. They’re highly perishable, so store them in your fridge and wash them right before eating, just like you would a strawberry. Sweet figs pair well with rich dairy so dishes with yogurt, cheese or custard are a sure bet. They’re great in baked goods and other sweets, and also stand up to a more savory treatment, as in a salad or pizza with a salty cured meat, and a bracing sour/vinegar component. If you’re looking to save the season, they make excellent preserves and are great dried.
Thanks to the geographic diversity of our vendors (different vendors are in season at slightly different times), you can expect to find figs for sale at market for 3-4 weeks. Find fresh figs and fig preserves from Figue Envie at the Thursday Mid-City and Tuesday Uptown markets - the fig balsamic preserves are a must try! Monica’s Okra World and Isabel’s Produce and Tamales at all three weekly markets also carry a more limited quantity. This versatile fruit is a special treat, so don’t miss out!

Figue Envie is making their annual market appearance! Owners and fig farmers, Mandy and Byron met while serving in Mali as agricultural volunteers in the Peace Corp. Now the husband and wife are teachers in New Orleans, but they spend their summer vacations connecting with their farming roots. After tending to fig trees on family land since 2006, they purchased a new plot which has allowed them to quadruple their production. You can now find their fresh figs and delicious preserves at the Uptown and Mid-City markets.

Monthlong P.O.W.E.R. Plates Women’s Fundraising Program , July 21
NEW ORLEANS
The monthlong celebration of women in the state’s hospitality industry is part of Fidelity’s “Potential of Women Entrepreneurs Realized” (P.O.W.E.R.) program, which caters to thousands of female-owned businesses. Currently, program officials are seeking women-owned, women-managed or women-led restaurants and bars to participate in the annual fundraising program. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and drive business to women-led restaurants in South Louisiana during the slow summer business months.
The Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and Fidelity Bank are matching donations up to $2,500 for this year’s program. After a record 67 restaurants and bars participated in 2021, officials have set a goal of recruiting 75 restaurants throughout South Louisiana. Neat Wine is the participating wine sponsor and a special beer for the program was released by Port Orleans Brewery.

The first church built for the First Presbyterian Church congregation burned in October 1854 and was rebuilt in 1857 as you see here. Designed by renowned local architect Henry Howard, the Gothic-style church could accommodate over 1,300 people and was immediately recognizable by its 219-foot steeple. As this was the highest point in the city, General Benjamin Butler used the church bell to sound curfew during 1862.
The second image is an 1880 carte de visite (CdV) of Lafayette Square taken from the top of St. Patrick's Church by Samuel T. (S.T.) Blessing, a local photographer who captured hundreds of images of the city for stereographic photographs and CdV as part of the mass marketing of photography in New Orleans.
The impressive spire of the First Presbyterian Church commands the center of the photograph with City Hall (Gallier Hall) in the background. Lafayette Square is on the right of the image. Interesting to note the residential imprint on the corner of Camp Street and South Street.

Tales of the Cocktail Foundation invites the global drinks community to return to New Orleans for its 20-year anniversary from July 25 – 29.
With hundreds of opportunities developed specifically for industry professionals from bartenders to distillers, Tales of the Cocktail® is the drinks industry’s leading conference for exchanging new ideas, products, and techniques. This year’s event will feature in-person education, tastings, networking, and awards programming. While programming at our host hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, starts on Monday, July 25, this year also features “Pre-Tales” kick-off events starting Sunday, July 24.

City Recycling Opportunities |
City of New Orleans’ Department of Sanitation announced that the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center, located at 2829 Elysian Fields Ave., will be open weekly on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. This temporary shift from bi-weekly drop off is in response to a higher demand for recycling while curbside collection is suspended.
Residents participating in the drop-off events should plan for longer than normal wait-times; the New Orleans Police Department will provide traffic control support to help the events run smoothly.

returns to Lafayette Square Park (602 St. Charles Ave.) in New Orleans for its 15th edition on October 14-16, 2022.
Charlie Musselwhite and Ruthie Foster will top the bill at the festival, which is presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the nonprofit that owns Jazz Fest. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival is an award-winning event, featuring two stages of music, a large selection of the best barbecue vendors in the region and a local arts market.
The festival will be held on Friday, October 14 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, and Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16 from 12:00pm to 8:30pm.
Performers at the 2022 edition include Charlie Musselwhite, Ruthie Foster, Robert Finley, Walter Wolfman Washington, Kenny Neal, Mr. Sipp, Jon Cleary, Johnny Sansone, Little Freddie King, Trudy Lynn, Mia Borders, Mem Shannon & the Membership, Joy Clark, Eric Johanson, Layla Musselwhite, Dk Harrel, Kevin & the Blues Groovers, and Wolfe Johns Blues Band.
The Blues & BBQ Festival was last held in-person in 2019 before the COVID pandemic. In 2020, the festival was produced online by the Foundation and its radio station, WWOZ 90.7 FM New Orleans, as “Blues Festing in Place.”
