COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION
REACHES ANOTHER MILESTONE
Coastline College is proud to announce that it has received a recommendation for approval from the Department of Education Direct Assessment Competency-Based Education (CBE) committee. While formal approval is pending, this milestone represents a significant achievement for our institution. Dr Vince Rodriguez shared “This is truly a historic day for Coastline College.”
Coastline College is the first community college in the country to be granted Direct Assessment CBE authorization. We extend our gratitude to the state Chancellor’s office Direct Assessment Collaborative Pilot Grant and C-BEN for their invaluable support in reaching this crucial step.
This authorization will enable Coastline to offer financial aid for our innovative subscription-based academic program. Students will have the flexibility to progress at their own pace, aligning their studies with the demands of real life rather than traditional semester deadlines. The approval marks a major milestone in our multi-year effort to implement Direct Assessment CBE at Coastline.
Dr. Shelly Blair commented “Going through this process has helped us crystallize our vision for education that puts students and their needs at the center. We are so excited to bring this program to launch in early 2025.”
Coastline would like to recognize the lead author of this application, Dr. Shelly Blair, Dean of Innovative Learning & Career Education, along with key contributors Chinh Pham, Director of Financial Aid, and Erin Thomas, Professor and CBE Coordinator.

PEP TEACHERS SUMMER CAMP 2024: PAVING EQUITABLE PATHWAYS
Coastline is pleased to have hosted 29 teachers for in-person collaboration at this year's PEP Teachers Summer Camp. A one-week camp for K-12 teachers was hosted at Coastline's Garden Grove campus in July. Faculty from Coastline College, Fullerton College, California State University San Bernardino, and Rancho San Joaquin Middle School collaborated to provide K-12 teachers with training focused on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI).
During the camp, the teachers developed lessons in cybersecurity and AI that integrated topics from their own discipline to take back to their classrooms. The newly developed cybersecurity and AI knowledge will be shared with the CLARK Center, a federal repository for cybersecurity curriculum. Coastline faculty look forward to continuing the regional efforts of Paving Equitable Pathways (PEP) to share cybersecurity and AI knowledge with students, teachers, faculty, and the community at large.

TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CYBER DEFENSE
Coastline’s Ethical Hacking Camp, held from July 22nd to July 25th at Garden Grove’s Technology Campus, was a great success. This four-day introductory event welcomed high school students into the dynamic world of ethical hacking and careers in offensive cybersecurity.
Participants engaged in hands-on learning, utilizing top-tier opensource tools to hone their skills in this high-demand job market. It provided the students with practical experiences in network, wireless, and web penetration testing. The camp was fully funded by grants and organized by Dr. Brown and the technology team at Garden Grove, ensuring that all students had the opportunity to explore this growing and in-demand field.
For many of the participants, the event provided invaluable exposure to cybersecurity careers, equipping the next generation with skills and knowledge in a critical area of global technology.

COASTLINE'S VETERANS SERVICES ATTENDS VETERANS ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
On July 1st Tom Boscamp attended Congresswoman Michelle Steel’s Veterans Advisory Board meeting. The board meets quarterly to address the needs of Veterans in the district.
The following issues were discussed on behalf of Student Veterans:
- Student veterans are having difficulty getting in contact with their assigned case managers, especially new students and transfer students, along with delayed authorizations for supplies (laptops) and course certifications leaving veterans in a precarious financial spot.
- Poor response time from eVA platform which individuals are instructed to contact and utilize.
- Students using benefits are having difficulty doing so during the summer semester with in-person course requirements and those fitting within degree program. Many schools have online classes, and classes can also be abruptly canceled due to lack of enrollment.
- The in-person requirement waived for summer like COVID Public Health Emergency exemption as precedence.

CHANGE IN TUITION FOR MILITARY & CORPORATE ED PROGRAMS
Effective Fall 2024, Coastline has increased our military program and corporate program tuition rates from $210 per unit to $250 per unit. Military students that are eligible California Residents will continue to be granted the discounted California resident rate of $46 per unit. Corporate students classified as California residents do not get the resident rate pricing.
We strive to keep education costs low to our third-party contracts, in order to remain competitive and give them good value for the investment they make in their learners. However, as costs increase, we find it necessary to increase our rates at this time.
If you have questions about this information, please reach out to Araba Mensah, Director of Military and Contract Education at amensah@coastline.edu.
