Corporations
Currently, businesses are all seeking to measure the ESG (environmental, social and governance) impact of their organizations. Investors continue to take into consideration the ESG profile of the companies in their portfolio. The SEC is poised to issue disclosure requirements to address greenwashing. Companies are repositioning themselves. The ESG space is complex and evolving. Yet project managers are expected to incorporate sustainability into their programs and projects with unclear guidance and metrics that are still under development.
New York City Government
Last Thursday, the New York City Council passed a bill requiring New Yorkers to separate their food waste from regular trash, with mandatory composting coming to all five boroughs by next year. Additional legislation has been proposed to increase New York City’s canopy of tree coverage after recent studies show a greater benefit than previously thought. These bills are on top of the package of bills passed in June 2019 known as the Climate Mobilization Act, a primary tenant of which is buildings reducing their greenhouse gases by 40% in 2030 and becoming net neutral by 2050, make New York City’s legislation some of the most aggressive in the world for a major city. New York City legislation was in response to concerns over changes in the climate and the long-term detrimental impact on the city.
World Governments
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. The 17 Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which set out a 15-year plan to achieve the Goals.
Today progress is being made in many places, but, overall, action to meet the Goals is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. 2020 needs to usher in a decade of ambitious action to deliver the Goals by 2030.
For me, the question is how can PMINYC help?
✦ First, we want to understand which of the 17 UN Sustainable Goals are the most
important to our community and where we should focus our efforts – it is not practical to seek to have outreach activities in all 17 areas. Please complete the June Pulse Survey to ensure your voice is heard.
✦ Next, we will deliver outreach volunteer activities that support the top three UN Goals
you select.
✦ Finally, we want to hear from you about your own efforts, please reach out to Diane
Chan, VP Outreach, at diane.chan@pminyc.org to share what you are doing. We want to document our Chapter’s activities and share them with you.
Last month we discussed our culture values, one of which is Together We Can. I know that
together PMINYC can contribute to achieving a better and more sustainable future for all! Let’s
come together in our outreach activities to make a difference within our companies, local
community and the world. Every action counts. The cumulative result of many small acts is
massive. As the saying goes, you can only eat an elephant one bite at a time. Hope to see you at
upcoming outreach activities.
I am listening.
Until next month…
Kind regards
Kim
