National News
June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month
June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, and this number is expected to double by 2050. With this in mind, it’s important to do your part to learn about this condition and the ways it impacts senior communities.

Because Alzheimer’s develops over time — often over many years, if not decades — public health professionals have many opportunities to take action. These include:

  • Addressing the risk factors for dementia among vulnerable populations
  • Advancing early detection and diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment and dementia
  • Improving safety and quality of care for people living with dementia
  • Providing better support to caregivers
ICYMI: 2022 National Health Center Week
National Health Center Week (NHCW) is the time that we come together to celebrate and honor the work of Community Health Centers. NHCW is observed in the second week of August every year and takes place from August 7 to 13 this year.

NHCW is promoted by the National Association of Community Health Centers which seeks to celebrate the accomplishments within their communities. Moreover, they endeavor to spread awareness about the importance of community health centers. They also look to advocate for emergency and long-term funding for community health centers to ensure the smooth provision of services to everyone for years to come. This year’s NHCW will be from August 7 - August 13, 2022
Health Center N95 Mask Program Extended
The HRSA Health Center COVID-19 N95 Mask Program began on Monday, January 17, as a time-limited program to distribute high quality N95 masks to underserved communities and populations through health centers.

The N95 Mask Program has been extended and will now sunset on Monday, June 20. Health centers will have additional opportunities to order masks through this program before the sunset date: Monday, June 6 and Monday, June 20.

Health centers are encouraged to work with their community partners (including community and faith-based organizations, HUD-assisted housing, and aging and disability networks) to order and distribute masks to meet community needs. The ordering caps were increased to support larger orders and allow for health centers with available space to also order masks to store for upcoming months as well. All orders must be received by Monday, June 20.
National HIV Testing Day
National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) is June 27, 2022, a day to emphasize and encourage HIV testing. The theme for 2022 is “HIV Testing is Self-care.” The World Health Organization defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” The NHTD messaging will emphasize that HIV testing can be free, easy, fast, and confidential. HIV self-tests can be done when and where an individual chooses.
