“Your life is a beautiful blank canvas. You have the choice of splashing it with the most gorgeous and spectacular colors, by doing what you love.”

― Hiral Nagda
Facebook continues to prove valuable. Some days you have to spend hours scrolling to remind yourself of this. This morning as I started my day I eventually scrolled a bit of social media and found this short narrative (see below) from Kurt Vonnegut. One of the comments on the post stated, "How great that he learned this when he was 15". So in an attempt to better the lives of my own children, I screen shot the post and sent it to my 13, 11 and 7 year old. I'll have to set a reminder to share with the 4 year old in 11 years! Ha!

I feel confident there are zero 15-year-old-Elkhorn-Chamber-Newsletter-subscribers. However, I imagine each weekly-reader knows a young individual who may benefit from what Mr. Vonnegut has shared. So I'm passing this along for each of you. For you to read as a necessary reminder that you should not only give time to things that you can win, but to the things that you love.

Read it. Then share it. Send it to your kids. Send it to your grandchild. Walk across the street and read it to your neighbor. There is no wrong way or wrong person to inform of this much needed reminder.

Please continue...
“When I was 15, I spent a month working on an archeological dig. I was talking to one of the archeologists one day during our lunch break and he asked those kinds of “getting to know you” questions you ask young people: Do you play sports? What’s your favorite subject? And I told him, no I don’t play any sports. I do theater, I’m in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes. And he went WOW. That’s amazing! And I said, “Oh no, but I’m not any good at ANY of them.”

And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: “I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.”
And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from a failure, someone who hadn’t been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could “Win” at them.”

- Kurt Vonnegut
