In Memoriam: Trailblazer and Lifetime Advocate

This week's unexpected passing of NJ’s Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver has left many in shock. She was a true leader who shattered barriers and blazed trails throughout her distinguished career. As New Jersey's first Black woman to hold statewide elected office, she inspired countless individuals with her determination and resilience. But it was her tenacity for addressing injustices that made her a true force for positive change in NJ.

From her early days in the Legislature to her historic role as the State Assembly's first Black woman leader, Lt. Gov. Oliver’s unwavering commitment to public service left an indelible mark on the state's political landscape and local communities. As lieutenant governor, she served with integrity, advocating for the needs of the people and striving for a more inclusive society. Her legacy of breaking barriers and fighting for justice will continue to inspire generations to come and her impact will not be forgotten.

Creating New Memories

JFS' Holocaust Survivor Services goes above and beyond to ensure Café Europa--our monthly socialization program for Holocaust survivors--is not just a gathering, but a heartwarming and memorable experience. With the support of the Jewish Federation in the Heart of NJ and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference), JFS’ Café Europa offers a truly uplifting experience for survivors to create new memories.

Last month, Ed Goldberg and The Odessa Klezmer Band performed to the delight of all in attendance. For August, our program features multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Cecilia who will perform jazz standards on the saxophone and flute.

To be a volunteer driver for Café Europa or help at the luncheon, email office@jfsmiddlesex.org or call 732-777-1940. Please consider a donation to help our aging Holocaust survivors remain safely and comfortably at home: www.jfsmiddlesex.org/donate. Thank you!

Help Kids Thrive: Join Our School Supply Drive

Back-to-school season is fast approaching and many families in our community are struggling to purchase essential school supplies for their kids. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of families in need.

With your generous donation of $36, JFS will be able to give 1 child a backpack filled with the essential school supplies needed for a rewarding year. Let’s give our kids the best chance at success this school year – we can do this together. Last year, with your help, we gave out 240 filled backpacks to local children who were excited to start the school year with the necessary supplies.

Helping is easy! If you want to fill a backpack, visit our Amazon wish list or check out our School Drive Flyer for more details. To make a monetary donation, visit us online. Thank you for helping us create a brighter future for our local kids.
