Have a Safe--and LEGAL--Fourth of July
As you are celebrating the holiday this weekend, please remember that
while State fireworks laws may have changed, it is still unlawful to set off fireworks within Cleveland Heights’ city limits on any occasion, including the Fourth of July.

Discharging fireworks or guns is not only illegal but also very dangerous. Both pose serious risks of physical harm.

To keep Cleveland Heights residents and visitors safe, we encourage you to call the non-emergency Cleveland Heights Police Department (CHPD) line [216-321-1234] to report illegal activity. CHPD will respond to all complaints and take appropriate law enforcement action.

Stay safe and have a great 4th!

Together, CH-UH Elementary Students RISE
Children have been through a lot over the last two years. To help show Cleveland Heights-University Heights elementary students they had come out of these last two years stronger than they went in, RoxArts funded the “Together We Rise” project, which gave them the opportunity to paint self-portraits under the guidance of professional artist (and mom of Heights alumni) Debbie Apple-Presser.

Instead of colors traditionally associated with skin color, like brown, tan, black, or white, though, students had to use red, blue, green, and purple to express aspects of their identity and feelings that went beyond race and skin tone.

Ms. Presser used a pre-recorded video to lay out the project with every kindergarten through 5th-grade class in all seven district elementary schools. Students then discussed with their teachers and classmates what emotions or characteristics different colors could represent before creating their portraits.

“The portraits are so revealing,” said Ms. Apple-Presser. “They’re very telling about who each child is.” She said the colors chosen and how they’re laid out across the children’s faces really reveal who they are and what they care about. “I can tell that this one is quiet and likes to read, while that one may go through three different moods every day.”

District students created more than 2,000 final portraits as part of “Together We Rise,” and RoxArts has been displaying them throughout the community for the public to enjoy.

The first installation was at Appletree Books in the Cedar Fairmount neighborhood. The second installation was the Main Heights Library on Lee Road in the exhibition space near Dobama Theater. RoxArts is currently displaying portraits in storefronts along Coventry Road. Project coordinators are working to secure enough public spaces to ensure every portrait is displayed publicly.
