Cultivating an Inclusive Culture in Drexel Engineering
It is that time of year when we take the time to brush up on our skills and knowledge to continue to foster a community of inclusion and belonging. Dean Sharon Walker is asking ALL faculty and staff to refresh their implicit bias training annually. Please retake the training by July 1. To access the training, log in to DrexelOne, click on the "Employee" tab, click on "Career Pathway" under “My Career,” and search in the search bar (top right) for “implicit bias.” You can then click on the online course titled "Recognizing and Mitigating Implicit Bias.” For most of you, it will show as "Completed." Click on the button below that says "Request" and verify that you would like to re-launch the training.
Faculty are asked to send their completed certificates to Dorilona Rose at
dr62@drexel.edu. Please contact Dorilona with any questions.
Sabbatical Proposals Open for AY 23-24
The Office of the Provost is accepting applications for Sabbatical Leave for the 2023-2024 academic year. A non-binding

Apply to be a Dean’s Fellow 2022-2023
As a means to further develop our talented faculty within Drexel Engineering, Dean Sharon Walker is seeking applications for the Dean’s Fellowship Program for 2022-2023. The Dean’s Fellowship Program is for all faculty interested in working on relevant topics in partnership with the Associate Deans in a broad range of critical areas, including but not limited to undergraduate education, graduate studies, student recruitment, research, faculty affairs, and diversity and inclusion. Dean’s Fellows report to the Associate Dean relevant to their project, as well as to the Dean, and are invited to participate in relevant college leadership activities. The fellowship is for one academic year, beginning on September 1 annually, and Fellows receive $5,000 in their discretionary or overhead account. Faculty can self-nominate by sending the following to Caroline Schauer, PhD, Associate Dean, Research and Faculty Affairs (
cls52@drexel.edu) by June 30: a CV, a personal statement describing which strategic priority is of interest and why (two-page maximum), and a brief support letter from relevant Department Head (emailed separately).
Congratulations
Amir Yaghoob Farnam, PhD, assistant professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, received Drexel’s first award from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for his project, “Internal Curing with Fine Light Weight Aggregates (FLWA) Created from Unsuitable Coal Combustion Ash (CCA).” The main goal of this project is to use waste coal combustion ash in the state of Pennsylvania to create sustainable value-added construction Lightweight Aggregate (LWA) to be used in concrete to enhance its durability.
Ioannis Savidis, PhD, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, is the recipient of an award from the Office of Naval Research for his project, “Temporal (Sequential) Locking of Mixed-Signal and Digital Circuit Intellectual Property (IP).” The increasing inclusion of third-party IP and the use of third-party Integrated Circuit (IC) fabrication facilities has allowed for advances in the complexity and functionality of IC designs, but has also introduced untrusted entities into the IC design flow. To reduce the susceptibility of an IC to both structural and oracle guided attacks, this project proposes sequential logic locking as a means to secure the IC.
A team of five faculty members from Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) are the recipients of funding from Midea America Corp, the world’s manufacturer of home appliances. The team is inclusive of Michael Waring, PhD, professor and department head of CAEE; Patrick Gurian, PhD, professor of CAEE and director of first year experience; Simi Hoque, PhD, associate professor of CAEE and program head of architectural engineering; James Lo, PhD, associate professor of CAEE; and Christopher Sales, PhD, associate professor of CAEE. Their project, “Comfort Survey and Ultraviolet (UV) Experimental Study,” aims to conduct experiments that explore the effectiveness of using UV light irradiation on inactivation of airborne viruses.
Drexel announced the awardees of the Environmental Collaboratory Inaugural Research Grant, which included two College of Engineering led projects. Simi Hoque, PhD, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering and program head of architectural engineering, will be leading her project, “The Impact of Greening Strategies on Occupant Health,” which aims to quantify impacts of weatherization services on indoor air quality and health outcomes of residents in low-income Philadelphia homes. Michael Waring, PhD, professor and department head of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, will be leading his project, “Evaluating School Building Health in the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood and Empowering Stakeholders with Knowledge,” this project will develop a 'school building health' model of ventilation, filtration, and air quality impacts on student health, performance, and disease transmission.
