May is Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

We know sexual violence data is lacking, and the statistics are almost certainly lower than what’s actually happening to the Asian and Pacific Islander communities. The reality is AAPI women underreport experiences of domestic violence and the number of Asian American women who have experienced sexual violence could be as high as 55 percent, according to the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence.

On this month's episode of OAESV's Teal Talk podcast, we were joined by bilingual advocates, Monicah Yonghang and Leela Karki, for a discusson on the diversity of experiences and needs within AAPI communities as well as the various cultural barriers that may prevent AAPI survivors from reporting sexual violence and accessing services.

What we learned is that when AAPI women do report violence, or try to, they often struggle to find the support they need. Many reporting hotlines don’t have the language or cultural capacity to help and intervention strategies rooted in Western notions of family structures can also alienate or push survivors away.

We must make support accessible to the survivors who need it most. Organizations serving survivors should receive enough resources to provide culturally competent care. We also shouldn’t overlook the critical work already happening by organizations who primarily serve AAPI women, such as Asian Services in Action.
