Happy Holidays from all of us at MBFT! We hope you have a wonderful holiday season, and enjoy time with friends and family. Here are a few meetings and updates to keep in mind as we wrap up 2024 and move into the New Year. Read on for info on a NOAA survey on marine mammal deterrents, the upcoming FGC meeting, 2022 Report of US Fisheries data, and more.

NOAA Survey on Marine Mammal Deterrents

The NOAA Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee has released an anonymous survey on marine mammal deterrents. The goal of this survey is to identify which marine mammal deterrents are considered the most effective by users to protect fishing gear, fishing catches, vessels, docks, aquaculture facilities, and other property. Data and information from the survey will inform recommendations on how NOAA Fisheries (or partners) could best invest future resources to further research marine mammal deterrents.

“The information gathered through this survey will help us understand the nature of marine mammal interactions and use of deterrents in various situations,” said Kristy Long, from the NOAA Fisheries Office of Protected Resources.

Deadline: December 22nd

Fisheries of US 2022 Report Released

Each year NOAA Fisheries compiles key fisheries statistics from the previous year into an annual snapshot documenting fishing’s importance to the nation. According to the Fisheries of the United States, 2022 report, U.S. commercial fishermen landed 8.4 billion pounds valued at $5.9 billion in 2022.

In our recreational fisheries, U.S. anglers took more than 200 million trips in 2022. These recreational anglers caught an estimated 1.1 billion fish and released 61 percent of those caught.
