Staying Active with Winter Activities

With the new year it is a great time to make healthy lifestyle changes and goals as a family. The winter months can make it more challenging to stay active.

However, engaging in physical activity at a young age can help children develop lifelong habits of being physically active. We recommend kids are active 60 minutes per day, which helps promote a healthy weight and heart, strong bones, muscles, and joints. See some examples of fun winter activities!

Examples of fun winter activities!

  • Go sledding or ice skating!

  • Bundle up, and take a walk or hike. You could even go walking in a local mall.

  • Sing or dance! Have a jumping jack contest.

  • Make snow shoveling fun by building a snow fort or creating snow people.

  • Build a fort inside and go indoor camping, play a game, or create an obstacle course with chairs and blankets.

  • Go for a scavenger hunt. Parents hide fun objects and write clues on how to find them.

Indoor Gardening

Growing Herbs for Year Round Gardening

If you have a good amount of natural light that comes through your kitchen window, it could be a great place to grow herbs such as basil, sage, or parsley.

How to Start Gardening Indoors to Prepare for a Spring Garden

  • Plan out what types of produce you would be interested in gardening and go shopping for the seeds.

  • Know which vegetables can be planted indoors during the winter. Some types of produce, such as Brussel sprouts, cabbage, tomatoes, celery, eggplant, and peppers, can be planted indoors. And when spring comes, they can be transported to an outdoor spring garden.

  • Follow the directions on the seed packets to determine when the produce should be planted outside. Most vegetables usually should be sown indoors six weeks before the last frost.

  • Find the best location(s) in your home that will give natural light to help your plants grow.

  • Find out how much water your plant needs to thrive and grow.

  • Fun tip: Take photos with your kids to measure plant growth!4, 5

Strategies to Support Health and Nutrition With ADHD

What is ADHD? "Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior."6

Kids with ADHD are treated in a variety of different ways, and the nutrition plan should be adapted to the individual, but some general tips include:

General Tips for Children with ADHD

  • Maintain a consistent routine with 3 meals and 2-3 healthy snacks per day.

  • Limit processed foods and junk food – especially those with a lot of preservatives and additives. Check ingredient labels. If you see a lot of chemical ingredients, look for a healthier option.

  • Offer lots of fruits and veggies. Constipation that can occur from some ADHD medications can be reduced with the fiber and fluid content from fruits and veggies.

  • Serve milk with meals. Milk helps growing kids improve their protein and calcium intake and is important for managing appetite.

  • Don’t skip breakfast!!! Studies have shown that kids who eat breakfast perform better in school and on tests.

  • Some medications suppress appetite, and therefore extra calories or snacks may be needed based on medication timing. Look for healthy, high-calorie snacks such as nuts, seeds, cheese, hummus with pretzels, avocado, and whole milk yogurt.

  • Some medications cause difficulty gaining weight and necessitate calorie and nutrient-dense foods and/or a bedtime shake or supplement. Homemade shakes work great, but if something convenient is needed, try Boost Plus, Boost Kids Essentials, Pediasure, or Ensure Plus.
