LIVE STREAM

Thursday, October 31

Friends,

Yesterday, I spent the evening with brothers and sisters from around the world who gathered together in Mt Pleasant, SC to celebrate the Investiture of Bishop Steve Wood as the new Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America. It was an amazing experience filled with joy and gratitude for the work of the Holy Spirit in and through the Church. The worship was Spirit-filled. The whole evening was focused on the centrality of Jesus. If you didn’t get a chance to watch the livestream, I encourage you to do so and let it be a reminder that we are a part of a movement of God that is global, missional, beautiful, and all about Jesus.

I especially encourage you to take a few moments to listen to Archbishop Steve’s sermon. In it he encouraged us with three things: hold fast to sound doctrine, commit yourself to prayer, and to pursue a holy life. In doing so we live out our mission for the world and live into the “main thing” which is keeping our focus on Jesus. I believe it’s a word, not just for the ACNA, but for us here at CotA as well. You can find the entire service on YouTube here.

For me personally, throughout the evening, my mind kept coming back to All Saints Day. This Sunday is our annual celebration of All Saints Day, so it’s obviously fresh in my mind! However, the gathering was a tangible reminder that in Jesus, we are adopted into a family that is not only world-wide, but spans the course of time as well. We have received an unchanging witness to Jesus. It is the “faith once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3) that has been handed down and passed on from generation to generation. There is a “great cloud of witnesses” and saints who call to us, encouraging us to let “Christ’s love compel us because we are convinced that one died for all” (2 Corinthians 5.14). This is what kept coming to my mind during the the service and especially as I listened to Bishop Steve’s sermon.

To that end, I look forward to worshipping with you this coming Sunday for our one combined service at 10a. We’ll begin with a potluck breakfast in the Parish Hall at 9a (details below). During the service we will welcome Marcie Lewis and Katherine Page into the household of faith as they receive the sacrament of baptism. It will be a beautiful celebration of Jesus in the life of his saints.

Take Them A Meal

Please keep Father Guy Rainsford and family in your prayers as he is having medical issues. Providing meals would be a big help! Susan requests you send a text when you choose a date so she can thank you. She will leave a cooler on her front porch for meals to be dropped off.

Additionally, they say that sandwiches for Rehema's school lunches would also be appreciated.

Refugee Hygiene Supply Results

Even in the middle of an outpouring of generosity for the NC hurricane victims, the CotA family showed yet again what cheerful givers they are! Lutheran Family Services gladly received over 4 Rubbermaid containers full of dish and laundry detergents, toothpaste and shampoo for recent refugee arrivals from our recent collection. Thanks to all for reaching deep to assist with this ongoing need.

Compassion Sunday Sunday, November 10

The Outreach Committee is holding a ‘Compassion Sunday’ information and sign-up event for Compassion International. This organization partners with local churches in 29 of the world’s poorest countries to provide child development programs that address educational, physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Please consider visiting the Compassion table after either service to speak with a CotA member familiar with the child sponsorship program. They would love to share their personal experience with this ministry with you.

Zach Slagel's CotA Talk Sunday October 27

CotA has been supporting the Slagels and their growing family with prayer and financial assistance since they began this season of ministry four years ago. We were happy to have seen Zach again this past Sunday, the first time since 2021. We recorded his CotATalk so you have an opportunity to hear what he has to share with us about their work and needs.

New Men’s Morning Bible Study with John Barr Tuesdays, Nov 12-Dec 17

"Is a tranquil heart even possible? I write this to the men of the parish, inviting you to a six session early morning Bible study. I want us to take an amazing path through Paul’s letter to the Philippians.  Here comes that stunning verse: “I’ve learned to be content in every situation—in want and wealth, in leanness and muchness, in a pup tent or a penthouse….” (Phil4.11-12). We will meet each Tuesday morning 7-7.45 (time certain) on the beautiful porch of Louis McElveen. Louis invites you and I do, too. Just come. Here’s a fresh start. We’ll have the coffee. Be there. Grace upon grace." —John Barr III

Standing Against the Devil’s Schemes: Lessons from CS Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters

"Constantly keep in your heart and mind a sense of wonder at God’s grace and mercy in calling sinners like us to be in relationship with Him. What we never counted on is the war we are in—with the dark side—constantly trying to erode and distort that relationship. We will be exploring how we learn to grow strong even amidst the battle. I write this to say: If you want to do the class, get a copy of the book (The CS Lewis Signature Classics is excellent) and come to class having read Letters 1-5. Come on! What a journey!" —John Barr III

Last Sunday was a fabulous time of trunk-or-treating with some truly phenomenal trunks including:

  • Holly Miller's Pet Spa
  • the Wheeler family's Mad Hatter's Tea Party
  • Sarah and Millie Burnett's Toy Story trunk, and
  • Larry Cook dressed as a giant pineapple for their Fruit Stand themed trunk.

In the end, our winning trunk was the Mizzell's British theme which included a red phone booth, a tea party, and Queen Elizabeth (Elizabeth) with her 3 corgis (Margaret, Abigail, and Eleanor). This and other pictures from Sunday will soon be posted to Realm.

Thanks to everyone who made this such a fun event. It's not too early to start thinking about next year!

Stewardship

A DEEPLY ROOTED PARISH FLOURISHES ON THE GENEROSITY OF EACH ONE WHO SAYS ...

“CotA is my church.”

Giving is an act of worship, a way of acknowledging everything we have comes from the hand of the Lord, giving what already belongs to Him. It is a tangible demonstration of gratitude for His provision, trust and belief in His continued provision and faithfulness, and participation in the fellowship of the body of Christ.

Offerings plates are passed as an act of worship on Sundays, or you may give through your bank's bill pay, by post, or online.
