Beach Activity Commencing August 1st

Dear Karen,

In a previous newsletter regarding our damaged beach, I reported that we continue to work with both Suffolk County, the current local sponsor of our Army Corp of Engineers (ACE) engineered beach, and the Town of Brookhaven, which controls the taxpayer generated financial resources for beach repairs through our Erosion Control District (ECD). I am pleased to share that Suffolk County is expected to be on our beaches tomorrow with the machinery required to remove debris, which consists mostly of bunched up, mangled snow fencing that must be removed before we can put up a fresh, new line of snow fencing. FIPPOA has arranged for the dumpsters in which the debris will be placed, as well as its removal from the community.

The workers will also be removing the sand accumulated on the Fishermans Path public access ramp.

If you are on our beaches tomorrow and Wednesday, if not perhaps slightly longer, you may notice the excavator machinery which Suffolk County’s personnel will use to remove the debris to the dumpsters.   Please be mindful and careful of the machinery and workers, and please be patient with any interruption or inconvenience to recreational use of the beach.

FIPPOA has already completed the process of working with the Town of Brookhaven to have a new line of zig-zag fencing installed on the beach.  The materials have been delivered, and the contractor has been hired. We are expecting the work to begin soon after the debris is removed this week and will be completed in August. Material and labor costs not financed through our ECD will be paid for by FIPPOA’s Seashore Defense Fund, one of the financial beneficiaries of both this and last year’s Pines Party.

We have much more work to do to get the necessary repairs completed on our beach. I will continue to provide the community with information and updates as they become available. The work described in this newsletter is a minor but important step as part of the end goal of restoring the sand, berm, and dunes to the condition they were in when the ACE completed our beach four years ago according to their engineered specifications.
