CES Road Trip Vicinity's Historic Kendal Street Station | |
CES joined a team from the University of Massachusetts Amherst on December 19 for a tour of Vicinity’s historic Kendal Street Station in Cambridge Massachusetts.
Kendal Station has provided steam to many Boston and Cambridge consumers for 100 years, transitioning over the years from coal to oil to the current natural gas fueled combined heat and power plant. Vicinity recently started its next transition; using zero carbon electricity to create steam. Andy Price and Zac Bloom of CES toured the facility to learn how Vicinity is planning to integrate a new 42 MW electric boiler (pictured) in combination with a future low-temperature source heat pump system and a thermal battery to provide “eSteam.” eSteam is Vicinity’s name for steam generated using zero carbon electricity. It was a fascinating tour thanks to the generous and knowledgeable staff at Vicinity. Many CES clients are actively thinking about similar transitions, moving away from fossil fuels to an electrified and decarbonized future. The conventional wisdom over the past several years has been that the best way to facilitate this transition is by first switching away from legacy steam to low-temperature hot water distribution systems. Low temperature hydronic systems enable the use of low temperature ground source, water source, and air source heat pumps to heat the water into the 120 degree-to-160- degree Fahrenheit range. Vicinity’s plan to keep their legacy steam system and to integrate electric boilers, water source heat pumps (using water from the Charles River), and thermal storage is unique and innovative. CES will be watching Vicinity’s progress towards delivering significant amounts of “eSteam” to its customers with great interest.
