Make your own paddle
Paddle Making Workshop
with Sanborn Canoe Company
June 24 and 25 | 9am - 4pm
Great art inspired by water? For some it’s Picasso, Monet, Cole, or Beirstadt. For others, it’s the boat they float in, the fly they fish with, or the paddle they canoe with. MMAM is partnering with its Winona neighbor, the Sanborn Canoe Company, to offer this 2-day workshop. Come as you are, with little or a lot of woodworking experience, and learn to make your own canoe paddle using simple hand tools. Your ticket to the waterways wherever you live.

“barnacles and belugas…in an atmospheric setting…”
Colossal review of Liz Sexton’s Out of Water
"The lifelike wearable sculptures draw attention to a variety of beings that rely on aquatic ecosystems for survival," says arts writer Kate Mothes, as she covers the exhibition Liz Sexton: Out of Water, currently on view at MMAM thru September 3. Mothes looks at the relationship between the papier-mâché masks Sexton creates and the playful images her collaborator and partner, Ben Toht, creates.

Behind the (animal) mask
Out of Water review on Minnesota Public Radio
MPR reporter Alex V. Cipolle traces Liz Sexton’s artistic trajectory, from her childhood kitchen table to Vogue to Mystery Science Theatre, and now to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. “You can’t [not] want to try them on,” MMAM associate curator, Dave Casey is referenced as saying. “She’s elevated this to high art,” adds MMAM curator Jon Swanson.

Recent grant support propels MMAM forward | Two generous gifts from The Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation and the Southeast Minnesota Regional Arts Council (SEMAC) help MMAM continue to ramp up the quality and diversity of its programming and exhibition efforts. The Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation provided a timely gift to support the seminal exhibition project at MMAM this summer, Poetry of Nature: Hudson River Landscapes from the New-York Historical Society (on view through Sept 30), and the support from SEMAC will help underwrite the efforts to present Driftless: Sam Amidon and the Winona Symphony Orchestra (May 20). | |
