Sad News
Dear UUCR Members and Friends,

We write to share the sad news that UUCR member Pat Kobes-Gomez died on June 7 at Heron Point. Pat was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago and she had declined notably over the last year. Our thoughts are with Pat's husband Ray and her wide network of family and friends. She will be missed.

A service will be held at a later date. For those wanting to send a card, please send them to Ray's home address found in the UUCR Members and Friends Directory.

In care,
Nancy and Rev. Sue

What More Do YOU PEOPLE Want?

While scrolling through Facebook, I saw a post (a mean and demeaning post) which began, "Gay marriage is legal, what more do YOU PEOPLE want??" The response below is useful at many levels.

"Gay marriage is legal, what more do YOU PEOPLE want??"

"So many things, thanks for asking!

  • an end to conversion therapy for gay and trans youth
  • repeal of laws which legalize discrimination against lgbt+ people if it's derived from 'sincerely held religious beliefs'
  • recognition and protection for lgbt+ people on the international stage
  • reduction in the rates of suicide, depression, and homelessness among lgbt+ people
  • to be able to google 'lesbian' without seeing pornography (which means an end to the fetishization of lgbt+ people in general, particularly wlw and transwomen)
  • legislation to add workplace protections for trans and gay people in all 50 states
  • repeal of bathroom bills that bar trans people from using the appropriate restrooms
  • recognition and remembrance for the countless individuals who died of HIV/AIDS and reparations for the survivors
  • an end to 'gay panic' and 'trans panic' defenses
  • media representation that doesn't end with the character's death

Marriage equality was not the finish line."

In our ongoing work as a congregation to be a fully inclusive community and to advocate for justice and equity, what might we learn from this post? For me, the response offers an important reminder of the many ongoing struggles, and it provides a clear list of areas needing attention through changes in attitudes, behaviors and policies.

As we celebrate Pride this month, a helpful reality check for us all.

In connection,
Rev. Sue
Fiscal Year '22 Ends June 30
Please have all payment and reimbursement request forms, auction purchase payments, and outstanding pledge amounts for this year to the office by no later than June 19 to allow time for processing.

Also, please consider purchasing the remaining $200 (4 - $50) in Acme grocery cards to put these funds back into our checking account by June 26. Thanks!
HELP NEEDED
The Building and Grounds Committee requests your help! A group workday is scheduled for Saturday June 18 at 8:00 AM. Also, a list of tasks and grounds work needed was sent by email on June 7 - please look for it and sign up to help! Please contact Diane Shields dashdiane@gmail.com.
ATTENTION
The National Music Festival will be using UUCR for piano and voice lunchtime concerts on Friday, June 10 and Thursday, June 16 at 12:30. We have blocked out time for them from 10:30 - 2:00 on both days. During this time period, the UUCR building will be unavailable for other uses.
UUCR Summer Office Hours
Beginning Sunday, June 12, through Sunday, August 28, the UUCR office hours will only be on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. This is so Darlene (office administrator) can take time off for vacation days not taken from last year and this year, and for some of the overtime hours accrued. During this time period she will continue doing Reflections and monitor the UUCR email and voicemail while away from the office.
Discussion Leaders Needed
There are still a few open slots that need to be filled — June 26, August 21, and September 4. Please consider leading a Summer Discussion and sign up on the sheet provided on the whiteboard. These are informal get-togethers and a great time to share and explore your interest in a topic with others.

The Summer Session Discussions will not be available through Zoom.

Contact Nancy Holland (holland.nlh@gmail.com)
for questions or more details.
Pastoral Care and Connection
You are encouraged to share your joys and sorrows with the UUCR Pastoral Associates (see below). This team is a mixed group — but all have had previous life experiences and a variety of professional training in counseling and philosophy. Please contact one, or several of us, if you “want to talk.”
