Robotics take on Ventura & LA Regionals
On March 10th through March 12th, PVPHS’s FRC Robotics Team 2637 - Phantom Catz, attended the Ventura Regional Competition. Overall, the event was an emotional rollercoaster. The team played well throughout the qualification matches and was selected to join the top 3rd ranked alliance. Alongside its alliance partners, the team made it all the way to the finals, eventually losing to the top alliance team made up of Ventura-based team 4414 HighTide and Hawaiian juggernauts Team 359. In addition to being finalists, the team also won the Spirit Award, which recognizes outstanding team spirit. One of the team’s amazing students, Mason Kramer, was selected for the Dean’s List Award, which recognizes a student who shows outstanding devotion to FIRST Robotics and its mission ideals. At the end, the team was filled with joy and determination to work harder and reach higher for the next regionals.

A few weeks later, the team competed in the Los Angeles Regional Competition from April 1st through April 3rd. In preparation for the competition, the team implemented many changes such as reducing the robot’s weight and lowering its center of gravity for better balance. Throughout the qualifying rounds, the Phantom Catz were able to maintain a top-10 ranking out of the 42 teams present, reaching a peak rank 1 right after lunch on Saturday. In the playoffs, the team was the 3rd seed Alliance Captain but was eliminated in the semi-finals during a nail-bitingly close semifinals match. Though initially disheartened, the team’s morale rebounded when they were awarded the Engineering Inspiration award, which recognizes a team that has demonstrated outstanding efforts in engineering and promoting STEM throughout their community and communities all over the world. This very prestigious award earned the team a spot in the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston, Texas from April 20th to 23rd, and included a grant from NASA which pays for the team’s World Championship registration fee. The team is now making some last modifications in preparation for the World Championships.

PVPHS Key Club Update
Key Club is the largest student-led service organization in the world. Our school’s club has been working diligently to do good within our community.
Here’s a little recap:

Most Improved Club Award:
The PVPHS Key Club had a 5066.67% increase in membership this year from the sparse number of returning members from the previous school year. That paired with the service projects that they have hosted, the dedication of the members and board, and incredible partnerships with organizations in the community led to the PVPHS Key Club winning the Most Improved Club award awarded to them by Key Club International.

Letters to Seniors Event:
The PVPHS Key Club initiated a partnership with the Kensington Senior Living Facility in Redondo beach to have their members write cards for the residents at the senior living home. The club successfully handmade and donated 160 cards to the organization. The Key Club members hand wrote kind and happy messages on either a template card provided by the board members or handmade beautiful and unique cards. The Kensington Senior Living Executive Director, Robert May, was ecstatic when Key Club President, Alana Cho, delivered the cards. The Key Club Board set a goal of 80 cards and the members of the Peninsula Key Club went above and beyond, doubling the goal number.
Rolling Hills Estates Kiwanis and Lomita Boys and Girls Club Christmas Party (December 18, 2021):
Partnered with the RHE Kiwanis group and the Lomita Boys and Girls Club, the PVPHS chapter helped to throw a Christmas party for underprivileged inner-city children. There, they helped the children do arts and crafts, create gifts for their loved ones, passed out presents, and helped to set up, decorate, and clean up the party. The PVPHS chapter sent 21 members to this event.
Rolling Hills Estates Kiwanis Project Shoe (September 11, 2021):
Partnered with the Rolling Hills Estates Kiwanis and SKECHERS organization, PVPHS Key Club sent 9 members to help 54 children from underprivileged families get brand new shoes and school supplies for the new school year. The shoes are provided by SKECHERs at a 20% discount to the RHE Kiwanis. The children ranged from 6 to 7 years old and came from Wilmington, Harbor City, and San Pedro.
