American Lung Association’s "State of the Air" Report is out
|
|
The American Lung Association’s "State of the Air" 2022 is the latest edition of an annual report looking at air quality in communities nationwide. New Castle and Cecil Counties have received an "F" for high ozone.
Key findings include:
- More than 137 million people live in counties with unhealthy levels of ozone or particle pollution.
- Climate change is driving wildfires that are undoing some of the nation’s air quality progress.
- We saw more days with “very unhealthy” and “hazardous” air quality than ever before in the 23-year history of this report, again due to wildfire smoke.
- People of color were 61% more likely than white people to live in a county with a failing grade for at least one pollutant.
The report is packed with local data, including a zip code lookup and estimated numbers of populations at risk in every county. It also includes information on the health impacts of ozone and particle pollution and recommendations for action for individuals and local, state and federal policymakers.

Pollution and Health Study Update
|
|
As published by The Lancet Planetary Health, "The Lancet Commission on pollution and health reported that pollution was responsible for 9 million premature deaths in 2015, making it the world's largest environmental risk factor for disease and premature death. We have now updated this estimate using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019. We find that pollution remains responsible for approximately 9 million deaths per year, corresponding to one in six deaths worldwide. Air pollution (both household and ambient air pollution) remains responsible for the greatest number of deaths, causing 6.7 million deaths."
