Dear familia,

On the evening of June 23rd, as rain storms cleared and a beautiful evening set in at the Bronx Zoo, we graduated the 77 members of our third senior class. The members of our Class of 2023 are headed to colleges and universities ranging from Tufts to Temple University, from Cornell to NYU, many on full or partial scholarships.

As I shared from the stage, 100% of the graduating seniors earned the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness, demonstrating their knowledge of what it means to be a leader in the community. In addition, 82% earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, going above and beyond graduation requirements to prove excellency in both spoken and written Spanish and English. What is all the more remarkable is that these students were in ninth grade when the pandemic hit, and their resilience both individually and as a class are an example and an inspiration.

Below, please find excerpts from my Commencement remarks intermingled with photos capturing the spirit of the event. We also recognize the generous sponsors of scholarships and microgrants awarded during the ceremony as well as volunteer-leaders and organizations whose contributions have been vital to our success.

Wishing you a wonderful summer,

Melissa Melkonian

Founder and Head of School

"Today, we gather here to celebrate a remarkable group of individuals who have overcome unprecedented challenges and emerged stronger than ever.

"The journey you have taken during your high school years has been unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic swept across our nation, disrupting lives, routines, and dreams. It forced us to rethink education, to adapt swiftly to remote learning, and to find new ways to support one another. Our classmates became distant cast members from the Brady Bunch. And the most infamous line on Zoom was born: 'You’re on mute.'

"While many may look back on this period with a sense of loss, I urge you to see the silver linings that have emerged. You have learned the value of flexibility, adapting to changing circumstances, and mastering new technologies. You have discovered the strength of community, as you supported one another through the challenges of remote learning, sharing knowledge, and fostering a sense of togetherness despite physical distance.

"In the face of adversity, you have proven that your dreams are stronger than any challenge that comes your way. You are the torchbearers of the American Dream, lighting the path for future generations to follow.

"I have no doubt that the skills, knowledge, and values you have acquired during your time at the American Dream Charter School will propel you toward a future filled with success, fulfillment, and purpose. As you step out into the world, remember that you have the power to shape your own destiny and make a positive impact on the lives of others."
