The Dean's Commentary

“…and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”
Romans 5:5

Dear Friends,

Hope does not disappoint us! From the initial stages of planning Trinity’s Centennial in 2019, to the postponement due to COVID-19, to the launch of it during a rather trepidatious September 2021, the people of Trinity Cathedral have kept hope alive. As a community, we knew that 100 years of ministry is no small feat. We made plans to celebrate, and celebrate in a most appropriate way. We chose to live in hope, and we all benefited from this hope.

The Very Reverend Troy Mendez
Dean
No Wednesday Services in July
Due to General Convention and other scheduling difficulties, we will not be holding our Wednesday 12:10 p.m. services during the month of July.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and after the one on June 29th will resume our usual Wednesday services on August 3rd.

We have started taking signups for those interested in hosting coffee hour after the 10 a.m. service this summer.

Thank you to Bill Coleman, Debra Wilson, Bry and Hattie Navarro, and others who have already signed up on the board in the Olney Gallery.

Those who agree to host are asked to provide finger snacks of their choosing.

If you have questions or would like to use coffee hour to celebrate a larger mission or anniversary, email Clarissa at clarissa@trinitycathedral.com.
TODAY: Free Health Screenings & COVID-19 Vaccines
Thursday, June 9 | 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Mark your calendars! The University of Arizona College of Public Health's mobile health unit will be stopping by the Cathedral on Thursday, June 9th to provide free health screenings and COVID-19 vaccines.

Walk-ins are welcome for both health screenings and vaccines, though those who register for a vaccine through the AZDHS website or calling 602-506-6767 can save some administration time after they arrive.
Pride History Tour
Wednesday, June 15 | 7:00 p.m.

As part of our celebration of Pride Month, historian Marshall Shore will lead a walking tour of the history of the LGBTQ+ community on Roosevelt Street.

We will meet at the Cathedral at 7 p.m., with the tour starting at 7:30 and taking about an hour. Please bring water and comfortable walking shoes.

To RSVP, talk to Clarissa this weekend or email her at clarissa@trinitycathedral.com.
Trinity Congregational BBQ
Sunday, June 26th
After the 10:00 a.m. service

All are invited to join us for a special midsummer congregational celebration on Sunday, June 26th.

That day, we will have a bilingual 10 a.m. service, followed by a barbecue and fellowship.

We will provide the burgers, hot dogs, and fixings, but are asking for people to bring a side of their choosing. If you would like to provide a side, please fill out this form.
Red Cross Blood Drive
Friday, July 1 | 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

We have partnered with the Red Cross to host another blood drive at Trinity on July 1st. The summer months see blood supplies dwindle, and we want to do our part to make sure this life-saving resource is available to those in need.

Sign-ups are required through the Red Cross' website, which you can do so here.

We are also looking for an additional volunteer to help us with registration and other administrative duties during the blood drive. If you are interested, please contact Clarissa Ortiz at clarissa@trinitycathedral.com.

Observations
June Olney Gallery Exhibit
Dyane Welt, Carrie Behrens, Fred Nack, and Ry Sedrick present “Observations,” a collection of drawings and watercolors.

Dyane Welt observes concert musicians with pen and ink studies. Her sketches on concert programs capture a sense of the moment and the essence of movement in musical performances. Dyane has degrees in graphic design, fine arts, art education and a master’s in counseling. She is a public-school art teacher and has shown her work at several Phoenix galleries. Dyane is a proud member of Trinity Cathedral’s Visual Arts Ministry.

Carrie Behrens creates drawings with alcohol markers that began by employing an exercise she learned in college, observing and reproducing masterworks. The drawings started as sketches done of masterpieces at the Phoenix Art Museum but evolved into fun caricatures of the original work. She unyokes the piece from its source and makes it her own. Carrie has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art (with an emphasis in drawing) from ASU.
Fred Nack’s detailed pen and ink drawings remind the viewer of old book illustrations. As a retired high school math teacher, Fred appreciates the binary challenge of only two color choices in pen and ink drawings. Fred dedicates this exhibit to his recently deceased wife, Saunie, his beloved artistic muse. Fred has shown his work throughout Arizona and is currently working with a local writer to illustrate a book of poems and sonnets.

Ry Sedrick uses his watercolor paintings of migratory birds found in Arizona to observe “the audacity of the living to fly and soar – despite all challenges.” The complementary symbolism of birds and the color red create metaphorical images that aim to explore love, pain, and survival. Ry is a high school special education teacher and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines.

Garfield Backpack Drive
Collection deadline: July 15
Backpack blessing: July 17

School will be back in session before we know it, so to help the 1st graders at Garfield start the 2022-2023 year we are asking families to put together at least one backpack to give at the start of the school year.

Each backpack is stuffed with essential school supplies such as pencils, erasers, notebooks, and folders. For a full list of what goes into a backpack, click here.

We are hoping to collect at least 60 backpacks to give to students in August.

If you have any questions, contact Deacon Myra Kingsley at myra@trinitycathedral.com.
COVID-19 Tests Available
Thank you to everyone who has helped us do what we can to continue to slow the spread of COVID-19. So far, we have distributed more than 230 test kit boxes for a total of more than 460 individual at-home tests to the community.

If you have need of more, we still have a limited number of kits available.

Please keep in mind: The tests expire at the end of July, so we are hoping to give them all away before then.
