We wanted to share a few logistical details on the upcoming tax season

Federal Updates

  • Build Back Better - I have decided to stop trying to guess when Congress will agree on any new tax legislation so no new update on that front!! It is very unlikely any new legislation will be retroactive to 2021 at this point but you never know.
  • Stimulus checks - The IRS had to adjust many 2020 returns for taxpayers (including some of our clients) that claimed a credit on their returns for missing stimulus checks when in fact they did receive them. In an attempt to avoid this confusion for 2021, the IRS will be issuing a letter (a 6475 letter) to anyone they sent stimulus checks to in 2021. The 2021 stimulus checks were $1,400 per person for those that qualified. Please keep an eye open for this letter and share it with us if you receive one.
  • Advance Child Tax Credit - In a similar vein, the IRS will also issue a letter (a 6419 letter) to anyone they sent checks to for the advance child tax credits. If you receive this letter, please share it with us as we will need to claim that on the 2021 return and reconcile with the full amount due or owed.
  • Standard Mileage Rate -the standard mileage rate for business use of vehicle increased to 58.5 cents per mile in 2022 (up from 56 cents in 2021)

Colorado Update

  • Minimum wage - our last newsletter shared the new Colorado minimum wage rates which were $12.56 and $9.54 for tipped individuals (assuming with tips they still exceed $12.56). Since so many of our clients do business in Denver, we also want to share that the Denver minimum wage rates are $15.87 and $12.85 for tipped employees
  • Healthy Family and Workplace Act (HFWA) udpates - since our last newsletter, we have fielded several questions on the new paid leave law that becomes effective for all business on January 1st. This law has several areas that are open for interpretation. We strongly suggest you seek legal advice or contact the CO Department of Labor directly as they are the experts on this topic. The first link below is an interpretive note from the DOL that may provide some clarity. The second link is a Paid Leave poster that should be displayed or provided to your employees.
