July 2023: Family Fun & Plant Sale Photos
Plant Sale Photo Gallery
This year's plant sale set a record--bringing in more than $27,000 over three days. The weather cooperated with cool temperatures and no real rain. Although the skies looked a little threatening, it did not stop eager buyers from standing in line on opening day. Two additions to this year's sale were our home-grown flowering hanging baskets and pots and rabbit cloches made by our volunteers. Both sold out very quickly.

We are especially grateful to Sunnyside Nursery, T & L Nursery, Lovejoy Nursery, and Clearview Nursery for the generous donations that made this possible. We also couldn't have done it without our volunteers who spent months growing and tending flowering baskets and pots, repotting donations, watering, making rabbit cloches, and then showing up to run the actual sale.

The Party's Over: Monday at the End of the Half-Price Sale

It's hard to recognize that this is the same place. We didn't sell everything--but we came darn close. Our volunteers spent the Thursday morning after the sale cleaning up the plant beds, organizing pots for next year, and sorting the remaining plants.

Now we take a short break before planning for next year's sale--and getting ready for Summer Fest 2023.
Bees & Botany in the Arboretum with the Imagine Children's Museum

Summer is a perfect time to explore the garden. Learn about plants, flowers and insects through art, stories and songs. Experiment with traveling seeds, make a flower weaving project and create “seed lollipops” to grow plants at home. Bees & Botany is for children 3 to 5 years of age and runs July 10 - 13th.

Registration and payment are through the Imagine Children's Museum.
Summer Fest 2023

Join us in the Arboretum on July 22nd from 1 to 3 p.m. for fun in the gardens. Face painting, lawn games, arts and crafts, stories, scavenger hunts, and more--all thanks to our community partners.

Appropriate for all ages. We hope to see you there.
Fibonacci Fans Rejoice!

Fibonacci, the Arboretum's much-loved fountain, is getting a facelift just in time for summer. It should look as good as new in a few days. So far it's been cleaned and primed. Next comes the new paint job and reattaching of the top piece. We are all hoping Parks staff can find a way to keep people from removing it. Thanks to Tyler Chism at the City of Everett for getting this project underway.
Fundraiser for Backyard Garden Renovation Continues
We're renovating the Backyard Garden, and we need your help to do it. Work began this spring when we had the old trees and shrubs removed, relocating them either to new homes in the Arboretum or to the plant sale.

The plan includes a large patio area designed to look like a crosscut tree stump and seating that will look like carved stone benches. We will take advantage of dry summer weather for the concrete work and hope to begin some planting in the fall once the rain returns, with more work happening in 2024.

This is a major project. Your donations will help make it a reality.
Next Volunteer Work Party July 5th
Add July 8th and 15th to your calendar, too

We're ramping up our summer work parties in anticipation of both our July 22nd Family Fun Day and the August Sculpture Walk. The weeds are growing faster than ever, trees and shrubs need pruning, and we're hoping to plant a few things in the Nativar Garden.

Join us on July 5th, July 8th, and July 15th at 10 a.m. to get the gardens ship shape--and then stop by on July 22nd and enjoy the festivities at Family Fun Day between 1 and 3 p.m.

From your editor

I've been working in the same garden for over 20 years now, and it's definitely had its ups and downs. But I was particularly pleased in June with my climbing roses. They were planted with the hope that they would provide a show from both inside and outside the house. And this year they all came through better than I had imagined. These photos are all taken from inside the house. I believe the light pink rose is a Climbing Eden, but please don't ask me what the other are--I've long since forgotten.

If you would like to share images of your garden that you're particularly pleased with, please send them to our email, attention Eileen Simmons, at contactus@evergreenarboretum.com.
