Fireworks Safety
As the 4th of July approaches, the Lakeway Police Department would like to remind residents that shooting off fireworks in the city limits of Lakeway is prohibited by City Ordinance, carrying a fine up to $500 for each offense. Not only does shooting off fireworks carry a possible fine, but they are also a potential fire hazard, and the loud noise can disturb area neighbors, and stress our pets. Last year, the Lakeway Police Department received nearly two dozen fireworks-related calls.

"Like most of you, our Lakeway Officers are looking forward to a safe and enjoyable 4th of July," said Chief Glen Koen with the Lakeway Police Department. "To help ensure that happens, please use fireworks responsibly and only where allowed. The violation of the ordinance will burst the holiday bubble for your neighbors and our officers. Instead of popping off your own fireworks, please enjoy a local show, such as the one provided by the Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave."

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that there were 1,500 injuries last year related to firecrackers, with 74% of those injuries occurring in the weeks immediately before and after the 4th of July holiday. There has been a 25% increase in fireworks-related injuries since 2006. If you decide to go to an area outside of the city limits that allows you to shoot off fireworks, please do so safely and keep in mind the dry weather conditions, avoiding areas that could ignite a fire. Brush Recycling
The City of Lakeway Public Works Department offers brush and yard waste recycling at their facility located at 3303 Serene Hills Drive the first Thursday of each month. There will be another opportunity coming up on Thursday, July 7 from 7 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. This service is free for Lakeway residents. Here are some of the items accepted:

  • Brush & tree trimmings
  • Shrubs
  • Palm fronds
  • Leaves

Public Works crews will also start accepting oak trimmings at this event. In Lakeway, Oak pruning is a violation of Lakeway's Code of Ordinances during the months of February through June due to the possibility it could lead to the further spread of Oak wilt in the community. If trimming during acceptable months, for instance starting in July, pruning seal must be applied to all cuts of all sizes of Oak trees within 10 minutes.
