Wisdom of our Mother's

My Mom, Beulah, grew up with the Letterbreen United Church congregation, and then when she married transferred to the Holstein United Church until it closed a number of years ago. After, she enjoyed our Mount Forest United TV ministry for many years but isn’t able to watch Klaus’s broadcast anymore. Many years ago she was at a Mother’s Day UCW meeting where the roll call was: “What did your mother teach you?” Around the circle, it went with the members saying that their mother had taught them everything they knew, like cooking, gardening, and sewing. When my Moms turn came she said, “My mother didn’t teach me everything. Other neighbours and friends taught me how to do a lot of things like the piano, Sunday School, baking, and quilting. But my mother taught me one important lesson: "to always tell the truth.” 

Which she did.

I used to be sad on Mother’s Day because I have no children of my own. Then someone reminded me it’s not about me, it’s about my mother! Of course. And I can be happy to celebrate my wonderful mother. I was the youngest of seven children. Mom did a fabulous job in raising us even though she had depression all her life which wasn’t really diagnosed or dealt with until she was in her 60’s.

The words of wisdom that first come to my mind when I think of advice from my mom:

“Wash your dishes after every meal”; and “patience is a virtue; possess it if you can; always found in women, never found in men”!

My biggest adventure with my Mom was when I took her to Westover Inn in St. Mary’s for her 84^th birthday. We booked the Christopher Plummer Room. He used to stay there when he had Stratford performances. She was so excited to sleep in Christopher Plummer’s bed. We had a jacuzzi tub in our room and I had trouble getting her out. She had on a flannel nightie and knelt to pray beside the bed before we went to sleep.

I have many joys on Mother’s Day remembering my Mom and receiving gifts and cards from children who consider me a mom or grandma. So I am blessed.

No Mow May

The Green Team is so glad to welcome more new members to the committee. Since we opened up the membership to the community we have 15 members. Yay! 

We invited the new CAO of Wellington North, Brooke Lambert, to our meeting and had a very meaningful discussion about trees, tree bylaws, and our tree goals. 

On Earth Day, we had 12 nature and rain-loving people walk the trails at our home and enjoy all the blessings of our beautiful earth. In the afternoon, Daphne organized a garbage cleanup in town.

We are promoting “No Mow May”. It’s a new concept that I’ve been hearing about. The goal of No Mow May is to pause mowing during May, allowing flowers to bloom in your lawn to help early-season pollinators. I know. I know. You hate dandelions. But I love them. And maybe someday we’ll change from the concept of perfectly manicured lawns to something a little more natural. So if you’re brave and can deal with your neighbour’s possible wrath, don’t mow your lawn until June 1^st. Let me know if this is something that you’ve chosen to do!

Keep thinking GREEN and we’re always looking for more committee members! Our next meeting is May 3^rd at 7:00 at Mount Forest United Church—rear entrance off of the parking lot.
