Welcome to the start of the Second Quarter! I hope everyone had time to rest and rejuvenate over the long weekend.
Now that our students have settled into a routine, it's nice to take a moment to reflect on the first quarter, then look forward to the rest of the academic year. There are excellent postings on the Langley High School website that guide parents and students through each school year. The website includes tips on what to expect and the school resources available in person and online.
To learn more about academic development for each school year click on the following links.
Freshmen Guide to High School includes information about the Langley Honor Code, Time Management, Attendance, Service Learning and Peer Tutoring among other topics.
Information for a Junior includes Family Connection and a link to “ A Guide for the Junior.” This is a robust section of the website which even includes a step-by-step timeline with information for the college and career exploration process.
Information about Senior Year focuses on Family Connection/Naviance as a tool for college fit and career exploration as well as counselor communication.
Finally, please take a few minutes to check out the website links and bring your questions to the next PTSA General Membership Meeting on Wed, Nov 16 in the Lecture Hall. The meeting will begin with a Counselor Q&A at 9 am followed by a business meeting and presentations by the Langley Psychologist, the Social Worker and the Substance Abuse and Prevention Specialist. I hope to see you there!

Did you know the PTSA supports a weekly staff raffle? The PTSA faculty representative, Tricia Poythress, coordinates raffle donations from Langley families of items such as Capitals tickets, concert tickets and gift cards. The excitement builds for our teachers and staff each time we hold a raffle and it is a fun way to let them know how much we appreciate their work on behalf of our students. Ms. Hamilton, Ms. Crocker, Ms. Millman and Mr. Cukierman have all been winners this year!
The PTSA is looking for raffle donations. This is the perfect opportunity to find a home for some wonderful items or tickets you can’t use, or perhaps you can pick up a gift card the next time you’re shopping. Contact Melissa Schwartz at ptsalangleymembership@gmail.com with any donations (receipt can be provided on request) or bring your gift cards to our November PTSA general membership meeting on Nov 16.

one more courtyard to landscape
|
|
To help landscape the last of Langley's three courtyards, please donate a leaf for Langley's Legacy Tree!
By donating a leaf (copper $50, silver $100, gold $200) or bird or acorn ($500), you're helping to complete the courtyard renovation and "grow" the Legacy Tree – a beautiful wall sculpture across from the Main Office in Langley's Lobby. You choose the engraved message! The Legacy Tree is a permanent, prominent record of courtyard contributors and a lasting legacy for Langley and your family. Leaves also make great tributes to teachers, friends, pets, coaches, and grads!
|
|
Thanks to the 600 generous Langley families and local organizations who've already donated a leaf, bird, or acorn.

Langley HS has a number of new teachers this year! Among them is Caroline Player, the new Choir Director. Langley had long been on Mrs. Player’s radar concerning jobs and potential career choices. In her teenage years she learned about Langley through fellow peers, classmates, and friends and she always thought that Langley would be a potential place for her.
Mrs. Player grew up in southern Virginia. She began her educational journey at James Madison University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors in Music Education. She earned her masters degree in Choral Conducting from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Before moving to Florida, Mrs. Player served as the Choral Director at Warhill HS in Williamsburg for four years.
“From a young age I wanted to be a teacher,” she said. “[I love] helping people succeed and being involved in music.”
After graduate school, Mrs. Player was drawn back to Virginia through childhood and family connections. “Virginia is home for me,” said Mrs. Player. “I’ve never looked back.”
Given her desire to be in Virginia, Mrs. Player only applied for positions in the Commonwealth. When Langley’s long-time Choir Director, Doc Lambert, retired last year, Mrs. Player jumped at the opportunity and knew that Fairfax is a special place.
|
|
Mrs. Player already feels well connected and integrated within the Langley community. She’s been pleasantly surprised with how kind and nice everyone has been. “Mrs. Greer has been wonderful,” she says, “And everyone has great energy. [I] feel like I’m in a good spot.”
From connections as a teen, to feeling well integrated within Langley, Mrs. Player knows that Langley is her home and where she wants to be.
